11/06/2019 11:00 PMFor the second year, a portion of the proceeds from the annual Blackfish Tournament sponsored by Bill’s Seafood and Atlantic Outboard in Westbrook is funding a $1,000 scholarship for a senior from Old Saybrook High School or Westbrook High School. The scholarship is earmarked for a student who is interested in a vocational career after high school.
Since 2017, the Blackfish Tournament has been held in honor of the memory of Joshua T. Winslow, who was an energetic and accomplished carpenter who grew up in Westbrook. Winslow died in an accident on the water at the age of 31 in 2017.
The Blackfish Tournament takes place during the course of two weeks each fall. The winner is determined based on the heaviest combination of two fish. This year’s tournament was the 12th edition of the event and took place from Oct. 10–27. The winner was Jeff Nosal, who reeled in a 14.83-pound blackfish and whose two fish totaled a combined weight of 20.53 pounds.
The scholarship application will be available online and in the guidance departments at Old Saybrook and Westbrook high schools after Jan. 1, 2020. Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee and selected in early spring.
The recipient of last year’s scholarship was Westbrook High School graduate Gretchen Pierpont, who is aspiring to a career in the culinary arts.
