Valley Girls’ Soccer Beats Coginchaug in Conference Quarters; Volleyball Preps for Shorelines with a Win

Girls’ Soccer

The Valley Regional girls’ soccer team claimed a win in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals last week. The No. 4 seed Warriors hosted 5th-seeded Coginchaug and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Devils. Valley recorded the only score of the game on an unassisted goal from Sam Calamari. Valley now owns an overall record of 9-5-3.

Earlier in the week, Valley lost a 3-2 home contest to that same Coginchaug squad in its final game of the regular season.

The Warriors are playing in the Shoreline Conference semifinals, where they faced No. 1 seed Portland on Nov. 5 (after press time). With a win over the Highlanders, Valley would move onto the final to face off against the winner of 2nd-seeded Old Lyme and No. 3 seed Haddam-Killingworth on Friday, Nov. 8.

After Shorelines, the Warriors are competing in the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 9 and finishes with the final on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors will open play in the Class M State Tournament this week. Valley earned its spot in the state tourney by virtue of its 7-6-3 overall record.

The State Tournament begins with qualifying-round action on Saturday, Nov. 9 and concludes with the final Saturday, Nov. 23.

Volleyball

Valley finished up its regular season by playing a pair of matches last week. The Warriors split their decisions and ended the regular season with a record of 7-13. Valley now moves on to the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

On Oct. 28, Valley lost a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-21) home contest to Griswold. Ava Boyles had six kills to go along with three aces, four digs, and 15 receptions for the Warriors. Alena Crosby tallied 16 assists, four digs, three kills, and an ace, while Jamie Pullin provided five kills, five receptions, and a block. Madden Riley added a block with one kill and two digs, and Carlee Kirla had two kills, eight digs, and eight receptions.

Two days later, the Warriors claimed a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) road victory over Morgan. Crosby had 19 assists, seven digs, two aces, and four kills for Valley. The Warriors also saw strong performances from Kirla (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block, 10 digs), Pullin (5 kills, 5 aces, 2 digs), Mahi Shah (18 digs, 18 receptions), and Boyles (5 kills, 2 aces, 1 block, 9 digs).

The No. 6 seed Warriors played 3rd-seeded Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 4 (after press time). The semifinals were on Nov. 6 (after press time), and the final takes place on Friday, Nov. 8.

Boys’ Cross Country

Macklin Miezejeski competed on behalf of Valley Regional at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 1. Miezejeski finished with a time of 18:10 to take 136th place overall.

Previously, Miezejeski qualified for the State Open by claiming a 12th-place finish at the Class SS State Championship with a time of 17:36. Prior to that, Miezejeski came in ninth place with a time of 16:48 at the Shoreline Conference Championship.

Football

The Warriors played a road game against the Sports and Medical Sciences Academy-University-Classical co-op squad (SMSA-U-C) on Nov. 1. Valley Regional-Old Lyme took an 18-13 loss in the contest. The Warriors now have an overall record of 2-5.

Valley had to fight out of a hole after SMSA-U-C took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Warriors responded with a touchdown pass from Jack Cox to Brian Rankin with less than a minute to go in the second quarter, after which Brian Funk gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead by kicking the extra point through the uprights. After that, SMSA-U-C returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to go up 12-7 just before the end of the first half.

At the end of the third quarter, SMSA-U-C scored on a touchdown run to make it 18-7. The Warriors cut the deficit to a single score when Cox connected with DiAngelo Jean-Pierre on a TD pass to make it 18-13 with less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

With about two minutes left in the game, Valley had the ball on the opposition’s 35-yard line, but SMSA-U-C picked off a pass to seal the win.
