Several Huskies’ Clubs Prepped for Postseason; Football Loses Close One to H-K

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team completed its regular season with a Senior Night home game versus Barlow on Oct. 30. The Huskies played Barlow to a 0-0 tie to finish with a record of 6-6-4 on the regular season.

Morgan and Barlow both took eight shots on goal, but neither keeper let the ball in. Natalie Novarro made eight saves to help the Huskies earn the draw.

Up next for the Huskies is the Class M State Tournament that begins on Saturday, Nov. 9 and will finish with the final on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Boys’ Soccer

The Huskies are playing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week. Morgan earned the top seed in Shorelines by going 12-2-2 during the regular season.

The Huskies squared off against No. 4 seed Portland in the Shoreline semis on Nov. 5 (after press time). With a victory in the semis, Morgan would face winner of No. 3 seed Old Saybrook versus No. 2 seed Coginchaug in the championship game on Friday, Nov. 8.

After Shorelines, the Huskies will compete in the Class M State Tournament. The tourney begins on Saturday, Nov. 9 and concludes with the final on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Field Hockey

The Huskies finished their regular season by playing a game against Shoreline Conference foe Valley Regional on Oct. 28. Morgan lost a 2-1 road contest to the Warriors and went 6-9-1 for regular-season play.

With the regular season complete, Morgan will play in the Class S State Tournament this week. The tourney begins on Monday, Nov. 11 and will conclude with the final on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Volleyball

Morgan played a pair of matches to finish out its regular-season schedule last week. The Huskies lost both contests to put their regular-season record at 5-15.

On Oct. 28, Morgan lost a 3-0 (25-6, 25-21, 25-3) road decision against Norwich Free Academy. Lauren Kuever had four kills to go with four digs, while Sarah Kuever had six assists and four digs for the Huskies Charlotte Davenport provided 13 digs, 12 receptions, four aces, and five kills. Alexandra Kelly posted two kills with six blocks, two digs, and an assist. Maggie Mahoney added nine digs, two kills, an ace, and a block.

Two days later, Morgan lost a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) home contest versus Valley Regional. The Huskies received strong performances from Mahoney (4 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks, 12 digs), Lauren Kuever (4 kills, 3 aces, 2 digs), Davenport (4 kills, 1 ace, 9 digs, 11 receptions), and Kelly (2 kills, 1 ace, 11 blocks). Rachel Pellegrini had three kills, while Tatiana Serrano contributed 16 receptions, 16 assists, and 12 digs.

The Huskies are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week. Morgan is the No. 7 seed and played No. 2 seed Coginchaug on Nov. 4 (after press time).

Football

The Morgan football squad dropped a close contest against Pequot Conference Sassacus Division rival Haddam-Killingworth last week. The defeat drops the Huskies’ record to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the division.

On Nov. 1, Morgan hosted the Cougars at Peters Complex and dropped a 19-14 decision against H-K. The Huskies got off to a good start, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 29-yard touchdown reception by Alex Fratamico off an Andrew Nye pass. Joe Ciarleglio booted home the extra point after the TD. In the second quarter, H-K narrowed the deficit to 7-6 after scoring a touchdown on a short run into the end zone.

Morgan recorded another passing touchdown when Nye connected with Mike Zingarella on a 21-yard pass. Ciarlgelio’s PAT made it 14-6. Before halftime, the Cougars got another touchdown on a 1-yard run to make it 14-12.

In the third quarter, H-K took a 19-14 lead on a rushing touchdown for the final score of the night.

Nye was 24-for-46 passing with 302 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies.

Next up, Morgan is playing Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton at Coginchaug High School on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
