Hand Field Hockey, Boys’ Soccer Advance to SCC Semifinals

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the SCC Tournament by defeating Cheshire in quarterfinal game that came down penalty strokes on Nov. 1. The Tigers and the Rams battled to a 2-2 tie through regulation before Hand won the penalty stroke session by a 6-4 margin to get the victory. Hand has an overall record of 11-6 as it gets ready to play Guilford in the SCC semis.

The Tigers trailed Cheshire 2-0 at halftime, but cut the deficit in half when Carly Barba scored a goal from Maeve Connors with 19:53 to play in the game. With just four minutes left, Shea Docker netted the equalizer for Hand after taking a pass from Amy Woods.

In the first round of penalty strokes, Jacqui, Sandor, Woods, and Docker scored goals for the Tigers, but Cheshire also scored four goals.

In the second round, Hand goalie Megan Hart stopped all three shots that she faced, while Connors, Woods, and Sandor scored goals to help the Tigers prevail. Hart made 19 saves in the game.

Hand played at No. 1 seed Guilford in the SCC semifinals on Nov. 5 (after press time). If the Tigers win, they will face the winner of No. 2 Amity and No. 3 Branford for the title at Guilford High School on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

When the SCCs are finished, Hand will compete in the Class M State Tournament starting this week.

Boys’ Soccer

The top-seeded Tigers moved on to the SCC Tournament semifinals by earning a 4-2 home victory versus Amity in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 2. Hand now stands with an overall record of 12-1-4 on the year.

Prior to SCCs, the Tigers finished their regular season by notching a pair of wins. Hand posted a 1-0 victory over Shelton on Oct. 29 and then defeated Fairfield Prep by a 3-1 score the following day. Scott Testori, Evan Waterman, and Jason Wallack scored the Tigers’ goals in the win.

Hand hosted No. 4 seed Shelton in the SCC semifinals on Nov. 4 (after press time). With a win, the Tigers would face the winner of No. 2 seed Guilford and No. 3 Xavier in the final at West Haven High School on Nov. 6 (after press time).

After the SCC Tournament, Hand will begin its quest to win a fourth-straight state title when the team opens play in the Class L State Tournament.

Girls’ Soccer

The 8th-seeded Tigers took a 1-0 road loss against No. 1 seed Cheshire in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 2. Hand has an overall record of 6-8-3 heading into this week’s Class L State Tournament.

Earlier in the week, Hand dropped a 3-1 decision at Amity in its regular-season finale on Oct. 28.

Girls’ Volleyball

After winning its last two matches of the regular season, Hand defeated Sheehan in the first round of the SCC Tournament to reach the quarterfinals. The Tigers are 15-5 overall on the year.

No. 5 seed Hand hosted No. 12 Sheehan for its SCC opener and claimed a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-12) win versus the Titans on Nov. 1. The Tigers played at No. 4 seed Law in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 5 (after press time). The semifinals are on Thursday, Nov. 7, and the SCC final takes place at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

The Tigers had completed their regular season by posting a pair of sweeps last week. Hand defeated Branford by a 3-0 score on Oct. 28 and then earned a 3-0 victory versus North Branford on Oct. 30.

Following SCCs, Hand will compete in the Class L State Tournament beginning with first-round action on Monday, Nov. 11.
