The Guilford girls’ soccer team hosted Foran for an SCC quarterfinal contest and posted a 1-0 win over the Lions on Nov. 2. Junior Sophia Gabriel scored the only goal of the game off a rebound shot for the Indians, who improved to 11-2-4 and advanced to play Mercy in the semifinals.
Gabriel knocked home the rebound off an initial shot by Lily Riccio to score the game-winning goal for Guilford. The 3rd-seeded Indians outshot No. 6 seed Foran by a 20-1 margin in the victory.
Previously, Guilford had finished its regular season by earning a win and a tie. The Indians claimed a 2-1 road win over Lauralton Hall on Oct. 28 and then played Old Lyme to a 0-0 tie on Oct. 30.
In the Lauralton Hall game, Guilford was down 1-0 after 40 minutes, but scored two second-half goals to get the victory. Emma McSweet scored on a corner to tie the game 15 minutes into the second half. With 10 minutes left in the game, Riccio dribbled in and fired home a shot from 15 yards out to put the Indians ahead.
Two nights later, Guilford battled Old Lyme to a scoreless draw on Senior Night. Senior goalkeeper Claire Mackenzie earned the shutout in net for Guilford.
The Indians played No. 2 seed Mercy at Xavier High School in the SCC Tournament semifinals on Nov. 4 (after press time). If Guilford won, it faced the winner of No. 1 seed Cheshire and No. 4 Shelton in the SCC final at West Haven High School on Nov. 6 (after press time).
Guilford will also be competing in the Class L State Tournament this week.
Boys’ Soccer
The Indians advanced to the SCC Tournament semifinals by earning a 2-1 overtime win versus Wilbur Cross in a quarterfinal round home game on Nov. 2. Senior Devlin Ahlefeld won the game for Guilford in the OT session by scoring his second goal of the day. The Indians have an overall record of 10-1-6.
Ahlefeld’s golden goal came on a breakaway after taking a pass from Anthony Ippolito three minutes into overtime. The Indians trailed 1-0 after the first half, but evened the match when Ahlefeld successfully converted off a corner kick from Evan Lemon in the 50th minute.
Earlier in the week, Ahlefeld scored the only goal of the game when Guilford played Amity to a 1-1 tie in its regular-season finale on Oct. 28.
No. 2 seed Guilford hosted No. 3 Xavier in the SCC semifinals on Nov. 4 (after press time). With a victory, the Indians would face the winner of No. 1 seed Hand and No. 4 Shelton for the title at West Haven High School on Nov. 6 (after press time).
Following SCCs, Guilford will open play in the Class L State Tournament this week.
Field Hockey
The top-seeded and defending champion Indians defeated No. 8 seed Hamden by a 7-1 score in a quarterfinal round game at home on Nov. 2. Guilford, which has an overall record of 16-0, advanced to face No. 4 seed Hand in the semifinals.
After its scheduled game against Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 30 was postponed, Guilford held its Senior Night festivities prior to its game against Hamden, honoring 13 players for their contributions to the program.
Prior to SCCs, Guilford finished its regular season by earning a 9-0 win at Shelton on Oct. 29. The Indians went 15-0 in the regular season.
Hannah Tillier scored four goals for Guilford during the week. Cat Larrow scored three goals, while Ella Stanley, Maddie Epke, and Madden Cunningham netted two goals apiece. Allie Petonito, Lexi Hitchcock, and Ava Bucci each added one goal on the week.
Eve Young and Julia McDonald combined for the shutout in goal against Shelton. Young made three saves in the win versus Hamden.
Guilford hosted Hand for an SCC Tournament semifinal game on Nov. 5 (after press time). If the Indians win, they will get a chance to defend their conference title by playing the winner of No. 2 Amity and No. 3 Branford in the final at Guilford High School on Thursday, Nov, 7 at 6:30 p.m.
When the SCCs are finished, Guilford will begin its quest to defend its state title by competing in the Class M State Tournament, beginning with a first-round game on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Volleyball
Guilford completed its regular season with a record of 17-3 after splitting a pair of matches last week. The Indians scored a 3-0 win over Amity on Oct. 28 and then dropped a 3-2 decision to East Lyme on Oct. 29. Guilford is also the No. 1 seed in the SCC Tournament and drew a bye through the first round of the bracket.
In last week’s win over Guilford, the Indians swept the Spartans by the final score of 25-10, 25-23, 25-19. Emma Appleman had 20 kills to go with seven digs and two aces, while Juliet Young contributed 15 digs for Guilford. Emily Brouder posted nine kills with three blocks, and Sabrina Zuniga had four kills and four blocks.
Top-seeded Guilford hosted No. 8 seed East Haven in the SCC quarterfinals on Nov. 5 (after press time). The semifinals are on Thursday, Nov. 7, and the final takes place at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.
After SCCs, the Indians will compete in the Class L State Tournament, which begins with first-round play on Monday, Nov. 11.
Girls’ Cross Country
Clara Wiesler recorded a 57th-place finish on behalf of Guilford at the State Open Championship on Nov. 1. Wiesler, a senior, completed the 3.1-mile course at Manchester’s Wickham Park in a time of 20 minutes and 44 seconds.
Boys’ Cross Country
Senior Ben Crair finished in 97th place overall while representing the Indians at the State Open last week. Crair ran a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds to take 97th place at the Open, which was held on the 5K course at Wickham Park on Nov. 1.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
Guilford completed its dual-meet season with a record 7-6 after claiming victory in its final three meets. The Indians defeated Sheehan (93-88), Sacred Heart Academy (96-72), and West Haven (97.5-85.5) to finish with a winning record this year.
After claiming a 93-88 road win versus Sheehan on Oct. 24, Guilford notched a 96-72 home victory against Sacred Heart Academy at the Soundview Family YMCA on Oct. 28. Senior co-captain Alex Mayo captured first place in the 200 freestyle (2:06.13) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.72) and also swam on two winning relay teams for the Indians. Mayo and fellow senior captain Anna Angkatavanish were honored during Senior Night ceremonies before the meet.
Guilford took first place in 10 of the 12 events in its win versus Sacred Heart Academy. Also finishing first were freshman Grace Young in the 200 individual medley (2:26.82) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.85), junior Haley Moriarty in the 50 freestyle (26.94) and 100 backstroke (1:16.84), and sophomore Brynn Leslie in the 100 freestyle (1:01.22).
Guilford’s 200 medley relay team of Alyssa Simione, Leslie, Moriarty, and Mayo finished first with a time of 2:04.92. The 200 freestyle relay of Mia Amasino, Leslie, Moriarty, and Young claimed first place (1:52.79), while the 400 freestyle relay of Leslie, Simione, Moriarty, and Young also finished first (4:08.01).
Amasino finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:02.22) for Guilford, and Rylan Jacobson took second in the 100 backstroke (1:19.94).
Earning third place were Simione in the 200 freestyle (2:20.31), Amasino in the 50 freestyle (28.55), and Natalie Bryan in the 100 butterfly (1:17.69), along with the 200 medley relay team of Julia Earle, Jacobson, Bryan, and Olivia Biagiotti (2:17.50).
On Oct. 30, Guilford capped off its regular season by earning a 97.5-85.5 victory at West Haven. Mayo won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle for the Indians. Moriarty took first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Young claimed top honors for the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, Simione was the winner in the 100 backstroke, and Jacobson finished first in the 100 breaststroke.
The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay team of Earle, Amasino, Moriarty, and Mayo took first place, as did the 400 freestyle relay of Moriarty, Simione, Young, and Leslie.
