Valley Cross Country Sees Solid Showing in States; Field Hockey Notches Two Victories

Girls’ Cross Country

The Valley Regional girls’ cross country squad took sixth place at the Class SS State Championship at Wickham Park on Oct. 26. The Warriors earned 184 points thanks to some solid finishes.

Ava Cunningham took 19th place with a time of 21 minutes and 42 seconds, while Grace Jacaruso’s time of 22:13 put her at 26th. Caitlyn Bogan came in 38th with a mark of 23:12, and Stephani Sheehan took 51st with a time of 23:47. Audrey Lenda earned 66th with a time of 24:31, while Lacey Hall placed 68th with a mark of 24:39. Charlotte Norling came in 80th place with a time of 25:11.

Earlier in the week, several underclass athletes took part in the Old Saybrook Freshman and Sophomore Invitational, and the Warriors finished first overall as a team with 40 points.

Cunningham claimed first place with a time of 21:23, and Jacaruso snagged second with a mark of 21:48. Sheehan came in fifth place with a time of 22:59, and Isabella Sacks earned 14th at 23:44. Hannah Reibold (24:57), Campbell Toth (25:03), and Taylor Robinson (25:05) finished 24th, 25th, and 26th, respectively.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Warriors’ boys’ cross country squad placed seventh at the Class SS State Championship on Oct. 26. Valley totaled 254 points to make their mark.

Macklin Miezejeski took Valley’s top spot at 12th place with a time of 17:36. Egan Rothrock came in 19th place with a time of 18:03, while Ryan Reed earned 41st place with a time of 18:57. Sam Iselin finished 85th at a mark of 20:01, while Evan Driscoll came in 107th at 20:32. Henry McPherson placed 121st with a time of 21:08, and William Vile came in 131st at a time of 21:34.

On Oct. 22, the Warriors’ underclassmen took part in the Old Saybrook Freshman and Sophomore Invitational and came in 10th place with 250 points. Reed grabbed 13th place with a time of 18:21, while Vile’s mark of 20:28 earned 61st place. Reece Whitney came in 84th place with a time of 21:33, and Benjamin Safran earned 93rd with a time of 21:57. Luke Buccaro finished in 94th with a mark of 21:58, and Matthew Roscoe finished 95th with the same time of 21:58.

Field Hockey

Valley payed two games last week and took home wins in both contests to sweep the week. The Warriors’ record moved to 9-6 on the season with just a single game remaining on the schedule.

On Oct. 23, the Warriors defeated Haddam-Killingworth in a 7-1 road victory. Two days later, Valley grabbed another road win in a 4-0 contest against Waterford.

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors drew a little bit of everything in three games on last week’s slate. Valley earned a win, a loss, and a tie, and with these results, the Warriors closed out the regular season with a record of 7-6-3.

On Oct. 21, Valley lost a 4-1 road contest against Morgan. The Huskies scored their two goals in the first half of play, and Jake Burdick put the ball in the net off a Keenan Pindar assist in the second half to bring it to the 2-1 final.

Two days later, Valley hosted Cromwell and the two teams played to a 3-3 tie. Then on Oct. 25, the Warriors defeated Haddam-Killingworth in a 4-0 home shutout win.

Volleyball

The Warriors dropped three matches last week to go winless on the slate. The defeats dropped Valley’s record to 6-12 on the season with a couple of games left on the schedule.

On Oct. 21, the Warriors lost a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18) decision against East Lyme. Ava Boyles supplied eight kills, 11 receptions, and two digs in the loss. Madison Neviaser tallied six kills and 25 digs, while Carlee Kirla provided three kills, seven digs, and a block. Emma Counter added 28 digs and an ace, while Mahi Shah had seven aces and four digs.

Two days later, the Warriors lost a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 25-10) road match against Haddam-Killingworth. Boyles had eight more kills, three aces, and five digs, meanwhile Counter bumped up 19 digs and Alena Crosby had 19 assists. Jamie Pullin provided seven kills, an ace, and two total blocks. Kirla notched three kills, three aces, seven digs, and 20 receptions.

On Oct. 25, Valley lost a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 25-23) match versus Hale-Ray. Pullin had a strong showing with 14 kills and an ace, and Boyles notched eight kills. Crosby set up 32 assists along with nine digs. Madden Riley struck for five kills, an ace, and a block. Mackenzie Neviaser had a block and 19 dates, while Kirla made six kills, three aces, and a block.

Football

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme football team took a 35-28 road loss at North Branford on Oct. 26. The Warriors record dropped to 2-4 on the season with the defeat.

Up next for Valley Regional-Old Lyme will be another road matchup against SMSA-University-Classical at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.
