Cougars’ Boys’ Cross Country Places 2nd at States; Girls’ Soccer Finishes Regular Season Strong

Boys’ Cross Country

One week after winning its sixth-straight Shoreline Conference title, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ cross country team came in second place at the Class M State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 26. The Cougars scored 67 points and only finished behind Tolland (30 points) at last weekend’s state meet.

Junior Matt Jennings made the All-State Team by taking fourth place with a time of 16 minutes and 37 seconds for the 5K race. H-K’s other runners at states were Christian Uzwiak (13th, 17:14), Caleb Freeman (15th, 17:24), Sean Rutledge (16th, 17:25), Fisher Harris (19th, 17:45), Mason Gorham (22nd, 17:48), and Julian Spector (54th, 18:49).

As a result of their second-place performance, the Cougars will compete at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K finished out its regular season with a record of 11-4-1 and winning both of last week’s matchups. The Cougars earned a 3-1 victory over Morgan on Oct. 24 and defeated Valley Regional by the final score of 5-2 the following day.

In the Morgan game, Yumi Imai scored two goals for H-K, and Kedarjah Lewis picked up a goal and an assist. Kelsey Lonergan made 11 saves in net.

Imai scored two goals to go with an assist in the Valley victory. Lewis had a goal and an assist, while Autumn Walton added a goal for the Cougars. Sophia Torello and Lonergan shared the goalkeeping duties for H-K, making 11 and two saves, respectively.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars moved to 2-13 on the year after dropping three contests last week.

On Oct. 21, H-K took a 3-0 defeat against Old Lyme. Two days later, the Cougars lost to Lyman Memorial by a 2-0 score. Then on Oct. 25, H-K dropped a 4-0 decision versus Valley Regional.

Girls’ Volleyball

H-K improved to 11-8 after winning two of its last three matchups.

The Cougars earned a 3-0 victory over North Branford on Oct. 21 and followed it up with 3-1 win against Valley Regional on Oct. 23. Two days later, H-K took a 3-2 loss versus Lyman Memorial.

Field Hockey

H-K took three recent defeats to move to 0-12-1 this season.

The Cougars dropped a 4-0 decision to Old Saybrook on Oct. 21. Two days after that, they lost to Valley Regional by an 8-1 final. In its last game of the week, H-K lost a 6-2 contest against North Branford on Oct. 26.

Football

The Cougars played a close contest against Coginchaug/East Hampton/Hale-Ray in a home game on Oct. 25, ultimately losing the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division matchup by the final score of 7-0. The Cougars are now 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the division this year.

Alex Riccitelli and Kevin Cavrell both had interceptions on defense for H-K, which allowed the only touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter.

Up next, H-K will visit Morgan (1-4, 1-1) for another divisional contest at the Peters Complex on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
