The East Haven football team rebounded from its first loss of the season by notching a shutout victory over Stratford last week. The Yellowjackets went on the road and defeated Stratford by the final score of 20-0 in a non-conference game on Oct. 25.

East Haven and Stratford played a scoreless first quarter before the Yellowjackets broke through in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Trey Garea connected with senior receiver Kaymond Quattlebaum for a 59-yard touchdown pass to put the Yellowjackets up 6-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, junior Eric Araujo punched home a 3-yard TD run and then ran in the 2-point try to give East Haven a 14-0 lead. Senior Jacob Araujo sprinted for a 12-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter to extend the Yellowjackets’ advantage to 20-0.

For the game, Garea was 4-of-7 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown for East Haven. Junior Alex Duarte led the Easties on the ground with 43 rushing yards, Jacob Araujo ran for 42 yards, senior Mike Castellano had 36 yards, Eric Araujo rushed for 14 yards, and junior Dave Amatruda had 10 yards.

Defensively, the Yellowjackets played an outstanding game by forcing Stratford into committing five turnovers. Senior Mike Caruso reeled in three interceptions to go with a fumble recovery, while Amatruda also recovered a fumble in the victory.

The Yellowjackets are currently in the No. 8 spot for the Class M State Playoff rankings in which the top eight squads qualify. East Haven will return home for a Friday night showdown against SCC foe Cheshire (5-1) at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1.
