North Haven Girls’ Soccer Sees Successful Week; Boys Rally for Tie Versus Hand

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer team enjoyed a great week by earning a tie and a win during recent action. North Haven played Guilford to a 1-1 draw and then notched a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart Academy to improve to 3-7-2 on the year.

The Indians started off their week by hosting Guilford for an SCC Quinnipiac Division game at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 15. North Haven gained a 1-1 tie against Guilford to move to 0-3-1 in divisional play this season.

Sophomore Ada Forbes scored a goal for the Indians in the second half. Following a corner kick to the near post by junior Julia Bogen, Forbes beat the Guilford goalie to the ball and flicked it past her for the score. Both teams went all out to try and win the game as the half unfolded. North Haven had an opportunity for the go-ahead goal when Forbes got a breakaway, but Guilford’s defender made a last-minute sliding tackle to keep the game tied.

On Oct. 18, the Indians edged out Sacred Heart Academy by a 4-3 score in Hamden. Sacred Heart Academy scored the first goal of the game, but North Haven tied it up when junior Megan Russo scored following a free kick taken by fellow junior Carly Fresher. The Indians’ second goal came when Fresher knocked home a rebound in a scramble off of a corner kick to give North Haven a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Early in the second half, Bogen scored on an assist from Russo after dribbling past two defenders to increase the lead to 3-1. The Sharks scored a goal later in the half to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, North Haven restored its two-goal advantage when Forbes took a pass from senior Erika Holle, went past her defender, and beat the keeper to make it a 4-2 game. Sacred Heart Academy came back with another goal to cut it to 4-3, but the Indians hung on for their second victory of the year.

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven earned a tie against Hand and then took a loss to Cheshire in SCC Housatonic Division action last week. The Indians have an overall record of 1-6-4 and are 0-3-3 in the division.

On Oct. 15, North Haven traveled to Madison to take on Hand at the Surf Club. Junior Kasey Mongillo scored four goals to help the Indians rally for a 4-4 tie against the three-time defending state champion Tigers. Junior Eduardo Cienfuegos had three assists for the Indians.

Mongillo gave North Haven a 1-0 lead when he scored on an assist from Cienfuegos in the 9th minute of the game. Hand scored the next three goals of the first half to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime. Mongillo netted another goal from Cienfuegos in the 44th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. After Hand scored a goal in the 52nd minute, Mongillo scored a goal on an assist by junior Justin Falasco just three minutes later to make it 4-3. In the 65th minute, Mongillo scored his fourth goal on another assist from Cienfuegos to knot the score at 4-4, which held up as the final.

Three days later, the Indians hosted Cheshire and took a 3-0 defeat at North Haven Middle School.

Field Hockey

The Indians picked up a point by battling Shelton to a 2-2 tie at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 17. The Indians moved to 1-10-1 on the year with the draw.

Senior Christina DeAngelo netted the first goal of the game for the Indians when they faced Shelton. Sophomore Shea Saracino, a first-year player, scored her first goal of the season to help North Haven earn the 2-2 tie. Senior goalie Sophia Aquaro played a great game in net by making several key saves for Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s squad.

Volleyball

The Indians played three home matches last week and came away with one victory to move to 6-8 this season. North Haven posted a win against Branford before taking losses to Hand and Cheshire later in the week.

North Haven hosted Branford on Oct. 15 and swept the Hornets by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-16) score. Junior Lily Pollard turned in a big performance for the Indians by handing out 18 assists to go with eight digs, three kills, and two aces in the victory. Senior Aubrey Reyes had six kills with two digs and two aces, while fellow senior Alexa Vauiso contributed six kills, two digs, and a pair of aces.

The following day, the Indians had a home match versus Hand and took a 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-22) defeat. Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa had 10 kills with one block, and senior Melissa Seidemann notched eight kills and a block for the Indians. Reyes added eight kills in the match.

Then on Oct. 18, North Haven took a (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) home loss against divisional opponent Cheshire to drop to 2-4 in the SCC Hammonasset Division. Junior Alex Ferriouolo had 10 digs with two aces, and Okwuosa added five kills for North Haven.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

North Haven had one meet last week when the Indians faced Amity at the High Plains Community Center in Orange on Oct. 18. North Haven dropped a 95-89 decision against the Spartans and are now 7-2 on the campaign.

Despite the defeat, the Indians still saw several solid performances versus Amity. Freshman Victoria Pachnik recorded lifetime-best marks in both the 200 freestyle (2:26.86) and the 500 freestyle (6:38.06) for North Haven. Sophomore Brooke Nebor swam season-best times in the 50 freestyle (27.33) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.66), while senior Mia Coppola turned in season bests for the 50 freestyle (31.44) and the 100 freestyle (1:10.85).

Other athletes who posted their top times of the season included sophomore Giulia Faulkner in the 200 freestyle (2:08.18), freshman Makenzie Alogna in the 200 individual medley (2:42.12), freshman Mikyala Rapuano for the 100 butterfly (1:03.19), senior Abby Kirtland in the 100 butterfly (1:10.19), and junior Molly Coyle in the 100 butterfly (1:07.80), and sophomore Olivia Grimm in the 100 freestyle (1:10.06).

Boys’ Cross Country

One week after completing its regular season by winning the SCC Oronoque Division title, North Haven started off the postseason by competing at the SCC Championship on Oct. 17. With seven athletes running at the meet, the Indians finished in 10th place out of 17 teams at East Shore Park in New Haven.

Sophomore Jake Hines led the pack for North Haven by finishing in 37th place with a time of 18 minutes and 33 seconds in the 5K race. Junior Patrick Rourke came in 41st place by crossing the finish line with a time of 18:44. Freshman Tyler Wurm finished in 42nd place in a time of 18:46, while sophomore Mike Rubano finished 77th with a 19:34. Senior Aidan Bergin came in 91st place at 20:09, sophomore Nick Howlett finished in 93rd place with a time of 20:17, and junior Aaron Barbiero placed 97th in a time of 20:35 for Head Coach Carl Jackson’s squad.

North Haven’s next meet is the Class L State Championship that will be held at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Indians sent seven athletes to run at the SCC Championship at East Shore Park in New Haven on Oct. 17. North Haven came in 15th place among the 17 clubs that were represented at the meet.

Senior Reagan Forbes turned in the best showing for the Indians at SCCs. Forbes recorded a time of 22 minutes and 32 seconds to finish in 27th place overall for the 5K course. Freshman Payton Orosco was next in line for North Haven by taking 61st place behind a time of 24:26. Sophomore Caitlyn McFarland came in 99th place with a mark of 26:12, and sophomore Riley Minns finished in 107th place at 27:43. Sophomore Sophia Melillo finished in 108th place with a time of 27:45, fellow sophomore Gianna Mele finished in 110th at 28:22, and junior Taya Stanley finished in 111th in a time of 28:42.

North Haven will continue the postseason by competing at the Class MM State Championship this weekend. The meet takes place at Wickham Park in Manchester at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26.
