Santacroce Breaks Record Again, then North Haven Beats Hand; Girls’ Soccer Sees a Little Bit of Everything

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team took on a pair of fellow perennial SCC heavyweights last week and came away with a split to move to 7-1 on the year. On Oct. 8, the Indians dropped a 94-84 decision to Cheshire at the Cheshire Community Center Pool. Three days later, North Haven hosted Hand and earned a 102-81 victory versus the defending Class M state champion Tigers at Walter Gawrych Community Pool.

In the Cheshire meet, senior Ava Santacroce broke her own school record in the diving competition by winning the event with a lifetime-best score of 243.60 points. Santacroce had previously broken her own record with a score of 236.00 in a meet with Guilford on Sept. 27.

Sophomore Chandler Ceste-Martinez also recorded a lifetime-best point total on the diving board for North Haven last week. Ceste-Martinez totaled a score of 174.30 for the best performance of her career to date. Freshman Victoria Pachnick swam lifetime-best times in both the 100 freestyle (1:08.50) and the 200 freestyle (2:29.42).

Several athletes also recorded season-best times for the Indians during the week. Senior Angela Gambardella did so in the 200 individual medley (2:11.83), the 100 butterfly (1:00.50), and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.17). Sophomore Olivia Grimm finished with season bests in the 100 freestyle (1:08.39) and the 200 freestyle (2:29.04), while junior Molly Coyle posted season-best marks in the 200 IM (2:30.72) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.51).

Also athletes who swam season-best times included sophomore Giulia Faulkner (2:08.34) and senior Gillian Regan (2:17.08) in the 200 freestyle, along with junior Maddie Bergin (24.72), junior Alyssa Laborde (27.35), and senior Mia Coppola (32.28) in the 50 freestyle. Coppola also swam a season best in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:11.43.

Senior Abby Kirtland finished with a season best of 1:11.60 in the 100 butterfly. In the 100 backstroke, freshman Mikayla Rapuano (1:04.11), sophomore Brooke Nebor (1:07.66), and senior Mackenzie Montesti (1:10.41) each swam a season best for Head Coach Martha Phelan’s squad.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians hit the pitch to play three games last week and came away with a win, a loss, and a tie to move to 2-7-1 on the season.

North Haven began last week by taking a 2-1 road loss against Cheshire on Oct. 7. The Indians trailed the Rams 2-0 at halftime. In the second half, senior Erika Holle scored a goal off of a direct free kick to make it a 2-1 game.

Then on Oct. 10, the Indians were on the road to face Branford and rallied from a three-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 tie with the Hornets. With North Haven down 3-0 in the second half, Holle netted a goal on a breakaway to get the Indians on the board. A few minutes later, sophomore Ada Forbes was brought down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for North Haven. Junior Megan Russo calmly stepped to the line and converted the kick to the cut the deficit to 3-2. Forbes went on to score the tying goal and help the Indians pick up a point in the standings with a 3-3 draw.

In their last game of the stretch, the Indians posted a 2-0 shutout versus West Haven in a home game at North Haven Middle School. Following a scoreless first half, the Indians broke through when senior Julia Raposo made a pass to Forbes, who dribbled around the Blue Devils’ goalkeeper and fired a shot into the open net for a 1-0 lead. North Haven’s second goal came when junior Carly Fresher sent a header into the corner of the goal following a corner kick by Bogen.

Sophomore goalie Sophia Chagnon played a great game to get the shutout in net. Head Coach Gary Collins added that defenders Katie Ryan (senior), Emma Christoforo (junior), and Giavanna Damone (freshman) turned in a solid effort along the back line for North Haven. Collins also credited the performance of Holle, fellow senior Katie Chieffo, and juniors Megan Russo and Sophia Acquarulo in the midfield.

Boys’ Soccer

The Indians hosted Notre Dame-West Haven for a matchup at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 12. North Haven dropped a 4-2 decision to the Green Knights and is now 1-5-3 this year.

Volleyball

North Haven won one of its three matches last week and has a record of 5-6 on the campaign. The Indians started their week by earning a victory versus Branford and then took defeats against Guilford and Hamden.

On Oct. 7, North Haven was on the road to face Branford and claimed a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-19) win over the Hornets. Junior Lily Pollard led the way for the Indians by dishing out 22 assists to go with five digs and six aces in the victory. Senior Melissa Seidemann posted eight kills and two blocks. Senior Aubrey Reyes chipped in with seven kills for North Haven.

Three days later, the Indians took a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) home loss to Guilford. Junior Alex Ferriouolo had 11 digs, and Reyes added five kills in the match.

North Haven finished off the week by dropping a 3-2 (25-20, 16-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-12) decision at divisional opponent Hamden to move to 2-3 in SCC Hammonasset play. Pollard had 22 assists with two aces, Ferriouolo had 10 digs, and sophomore Eveani Okwuosa added 10 kills.

Field Hockey

The Indians took a couple of defeats last week to move to 1-11 on the season.

On Oct. 8, North Haven lost to Guilford by a 9-0 score in road game. Three days later, the Indians hosted Cheshire and dropped an 8-0 decision against the Rams.
