Dave Russo of Clinton successfully defended his title when the Shoreline Golf Society (SGS) held its annual Founders Cup Championship at the Farms Country Club in Wallingford.

Russo won the title even though he nearly didn’t qualify for the final round. The lineup for the Founders Cup was based on the top-16 point scorers from the SGS season. Russo finished in 17th place, but qualified for the tournament when someone in the top 16 was unable to play.

Russo, who is head coach of the girls’ golf team at Daniel Hand High School in Madison, started off slowly at the Founders Cup, but played the back nine at even par to finish with a net score of 68 for the round. Russo’s score was worth 25 points and, coupled with the one point that he had earned during the season, Russo finished with a total of 68 points to win the championship.

Mike Rowan of Old Saybrook finished in second place with a score of 25 points. Susan Bobbin of Guilford, Mike Dore of Westbrook, and Glenn Zavorskas of Madison finished in a tie for third place with 24 points apiece. Zavorskas turned in a gross score of 74 on the day.

The SGS is celebrating its 20th anniversary. With a membership of 86 players, the SGS is a member of both the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA), allowing its members to play in USGA and CSGA events, in addition to providing worldwide-recognized handicaps. The SGS features a 33-event tournament season that runs from mid-April to mid-October. For info on the SGS, visit sgsict.com.
