Morgan Girls’ Soccer Makes Way to States; Boys’ Soccer Improves to 9-2-1

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team clinched its spot in the Class M State Tournament by claiming a 3-0 victory versus Shoreline Conference opponent Cromwell last week. Prior to the Cromwell win, Morgan lost a non-league contest to Sheehan by a 2-0 score. Morgan has an overall record of 6-4-1.

Morgan dropped a 2-0 decision versus Sheehan on Oct. 7. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Novarro recorded 10 saves for the Huskies in the game.

Morgan rebounded nicely with a 3-0 victory over Cromwell at home on Oct. 10. Morgan scored all three of its goals in the first half on its way to clinching its spot in states. Senior Maddie Stopkoski got the Huskies on the board when she found the back of the net off an assist from senior Maura Kelly. Junior Carley Schmidt followed by scoring a pair of goals to solidify the win. Schmidt’s first goal was assisted by sophomore Julia Tanner and the second goal was unassisted. Novarro made five saves to earn the shutout.

Boys’ Soccer

Morgan earned victories over Amistad and Haddam-Killingworth last week and also lost to Cromwell to move to 9-2-1 this season.

Morgan’s week started with a 2-1 road loss against Cromwell on Oct. 7. Senior Josh Kennedy assisted fellow senior Zach Tuccitto for the first goal of the game, but Cromwell came back with two unanswered goals in the second half to get the win. Senior Nick Rubino and sophomore Bailey Goss combined to make two saves in goal for the Huskies.

Following the loss, Morgan went back on the road and defeated non-league foe Amistad by a 6-1 score on Oct. 9. The Huskies got to work early as Kennedy assisted Tuccitto’s goal at the three-minute mark. Just six minutes later, junior Max Skidmore scored his first goal of the game on an assist from Tuccitto for a 2-0 advantage.

Freshman Matt Lopez got into the action with a goal on an assist from junior Sean Cafferty at the 36-minute mark. Skidmore scored an unassisted goal two minutes after that and then Lopez assisted freshman Sebastian Kadlof’s goal at the 40-minute mark to increase the lead to 5-0. Amistad got one back later in the game, but senior Andrew Daly, Tuccitto, and senior Kyle Gagliardi combined for a nice passing play that ended with a goal off the foot of Gagliardi to make it 6-1. Rubino made one save for the Huskies in the victory.

Morgan closed out its week with a 3-1 win over Haddam- Killingworth on its home turf on Oct. 11. After H-K scored the first goal, Tuccitto netted a pair of goals on assists from sophomore Alex Gallardo and Cafferty early in the second half to put the Huskies in the lead. Cafferty added a late insurance marker on an assist from Tuccitto for the 3-1 final. Rubino recorded three saves in net for Morgan.

Volleyball

The Huskies took three defeats last week and are now 3-9 this year. Morgan lost 3-0 decisions against Valley Regional and Amistad and then took a 3-1 loss to Haddam-Killingworth.

On Oct. 7, Morgan lost to Valley Regional by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-21) score. Senior Maggie Mahoney recorded five kills, while senior Charlotte Davenport had six aces for the Huskies. Senior Emma Lovene contributed 15 digs, and senior Sarah Kuever had 12 assists.

On Oct. 10, Morgan hosted Amistad and took a 3-0 defeat (25-20, 25-21, 25-21). Mahoney had five kills and three blocks, Lovene posted 12 digs, and Kuever handed out 13 assists.

The Huskies finished the week by dropping a 3-1 decision to Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 11.

Football

Morgan went on the road to square off with Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby (WL-S-EG) on Oct. 12 and lost the game by the score of 54-29. The Huskies have a record of 0-4 on the campaign.

The Huskies allowed the first 28 points of the game, but broke through for a touchdown late in the second quarter when sophomore quarterback Andrew Nye connected with senior receiver Liam Whelan for a 42-yard TD pass. Senior Michael Zingarella ran home the 2-point try to make it 28-8 at the half.

WL-S-EG scored a touchdown to open the third quarter, after which Nye connected with sophomore Garret Garbinski for a 20-yard score. Freshman Seamus Staunton booted home the extra point to make it 35-15. After WL-S-EG returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, Morgan scored on a rushing TD early in the fourth quarter. Later in the frame, Nye found Garbinski for the duo’s second touchdown of the game, this time from 16 yards out.

For the game, Nye went 36-of-65 passing for 361 yards with three TDs. Garbinski caught 14 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while Whelan had six receptions for 109 yards and a score. Sophomore Alex Fratamico had nine receptions for 61 yards, and Zingarella caught five passes for 41 yards. Garbinski also intercepted a pair of passes on defense for the Huskies.

Morgan is on the bye week for Week 6. The Huskies will return to action when they host Cromwell-Portland at the Peters Complex at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25.
