H-K Boys’ Cross Country Ties for 1st in New Jersey; Girls’ Volleyball Qualifies for Class M Tournament

Boys’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ cross country team made the trip to Holmdel, New Jersey to compete in the New Balance Shores Invitational on Oct. 5. In a meet that featured 120 schools from across the Garden State, the Cougars finished in a tie for first place with Voorhees, New Jersey in the Varsity D Race as both schools totaled 93 points.

Junior Matt Jennings was the first Cougar runner across the finish line by taking second place with a time of 16:10 for the challenging 5,000-meter course. Following Jennings to the finish were senior captain Christian Uzwiak (10th, 17:10), junior Sean Rutledge (19th, 17:33), senior Caleb Freeman (26th, 17:43), senior Tyler Robinson (42nd, 18:14), junior Julian Spector (46th, 18:16), and junior Fisher Harris (47th, in 18:16). Robinson was running in his first varsity race for H-K.

In the JV race, senior Owen Howes claimed fifth place with a time of 18:35 to help the Cougars win the meet by 34 points.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Cougars scored 193 points to take seventh place in the Varsity D Race at the New Balance Shores Invitational in New Jersey.

Junior captain Meara Bodak was the first finisher among the Cougars by coming in 29th place with a mark of 21:26 for the 5K. Julia Callis ran a time of 21:37 to finish in 32nd place. H-K’s other runners were senior captain Lauren D’Amico (39th, 22:06), sophomore Brianna Minervino (60th, 22:46), and freshman Isabel Berardino (61st, 22:47).

Girls’ Volleyball

The Cougars qualified for the Class M State Tournament by claiming a 3-1 win over Morgan on Oct. 11. H-K also took a 3-0 loss to East Hampton on Oct. 7 and a 3-1 defeat against Hale-Ray on Oct. 10. The Cougars have a mark of 8-6 this fall.

Girls’ Soccer

The Cougars pulled off a 3-2 victory over Old Saybrook in their only game of the week on Oct. 10. H-K now stands at 8-3-1 on the year.

Morgan Madore netted two goals for H-K, while Hadley Commerford had the other goal in the win. Sophia Torello recorded 10 saves in net.

Boys’ Soccer

H-K moved to 1-9 after dropping two contests last week. The Cougars lost a 3-0 decision against Old Saybrook on Oct. 7. Four days later, H-K lost to Morgan by a 3-1 score.

Field Hockey

H-K played one game last week when the Cougars faced Morgan on Oct. 7. The Cougars took a 2-0 loss against the Huskies to move to 0-7-1 on the year.

Football

Haddam-Killingworth took a 27-7 home loss against Granby-Canton on Oct. 11. H-K has a record of 0-5 on the campaign.

The Cougars fell behind 14-0 midway through the third quarter before getting on the board when James Bobbi scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Kevin Cavrell kicked the extra point for H-K to make it 14-7. Granby-Canton scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.

Trey Callender and Matteo Piacenti each had an interception on defense for the Cougars.

Following a bye week, H-K will hit the gridiron for a home game with East Hampton/Hale-Ray at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25.
