Guilford’s Cross Country Teams Win Division Titles; Volleyball, Field Hockey Stay Undefeated

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country squad claimed the SCC Hammonasset Division title and capped off a 9-0 regular season by sweeping a tri-meet at home last week. The Indians earned a 15-48 win over Hand and a 15-49 victory against Foran at the East River Preserve on Oct. 7.

Senior Clara Wiesler took first place by running a time of 19:46 for Guilford. The Indians also claimed places two through six, led by sophomore Olivia Skapczynski (20:11), senior Emma Bonz (20:12), sophomore Eliza McCoole (20:21), sophomore Katrina Muhs (20:23), and freshman Clara Laughlin (20:24).

The Indians will begin their postseason when they compete at the SCC Championship this week. The meet takes place at the East Shore Athletic Complex in New Haven at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians finished their dual-meet season at 9-0 and also won the SCC Hammonasset Division championship after defeating two teams at the East River Preserve on Oct. 7. Guilford beat Hand by a 19-40 score and notched a 15-50 win versus Foran while running on its home course in its regular-season finale.

Senior Ben Crair finished with a time of 16:18 to earn first place for the Indians. Senior Jacob Shiffrin came in third place (16:34), senior Griffin Hughes finished fourth (16:48), sophomore Justin Shiffrin placed fifth (16:57), and senior Mckendry Eschinger took sixth place (17:03).

Guilford is competing at the SCC Championship at East Shore Athletic Complex on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.

Volleyball

Guilford remained undefeated on the season by earning a trio of shutout victories last week. The Indians defeated East Haven 3-0 on Oct. 7, notched a 3-0 shutout against North Haven on Oct. 10, and then shut out Sheehan by a 3-0 score the following day. Guilford, which is ranked No. 1 in Class M, has an overall record of 13-0 and has also won 38-consecutive sets.

After blanking East Haven and North Haven, Guilford swept Sheehan by the final score of 25-7, 25-14, 25-16. Emma Applemann had 10 kills with nine digs and eight aces in the victory. Juliet Young had nine digs and four aces, while Emily Brodeur added seven kills with four blocks.

Field Hockey

The Indians improved their perfect record to 9-0 by claiming a pair of wins last week. Guilford posted a 9-0 shutout over North Haven on Oct. 8 and then blanked Sheehan by a 5-0 final on Oct. 10.

Guilford, the No. 1-ranked team in the Class M standings, was led by four goals and one assist from Ella Stanley in its two wins last week. Maddie Epke and Ava Bucci both had two goals with two assists on the week. The Indians also received single scores from Jamie Neleber, Madden Cunningham, Hannah Tillier, Sarah Minuit, Lexi Hitchcock, and Kathryn Amatruda.

Eve Young and Julia McDonald split up the goalkeeping duties last week for the Indians, who have outscored their opponents by a 53-5 differential this year.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians pushed their record to 8-1-1 after defeating Hand and earning a tie against Cheshire last week. Guilford blanked Hand by a 3-0 score on Oct. 8 and then played Cheshire to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 11.

Following a scoreless first half, Moira Kellaher gave Guilford a 1-0 lead over Hand in the 56th minute when she deflected in a free kick by Madison Gambardella from 22 yards out. Lily Riccio made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute when she headed home a long ball from Addie Kenney. Four minutes later, Audrey Kamen scored her first varsity goal after taking a cross from Maria Jennings.

Later in the week, Guilford outshot Cheshire by a 15-7 margin, but settled for the tie after neither side was able to score a goal. Goalkeepers Clarie Mackenzie and Olivia Ste. Marie combined for the team’s ninth shutout of the season.

Football

Guilford had a bye week for Week 5 play. With their 3-1 record, the Indians will return to action on Friday, Oct. 18 for an SCC Tier 3 matchup against Lyman Hall. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Kavanaugh Field.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians earned their second win of the season by claiming a 94-76 road victory against the East Haven-Wilbur Cross co-op squad on Oct. 7.

Senior Alex Mayo and freshman Grace Young paced the Indians with individual victories, while also swimming on a pair of triumphant relays. Mayo finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:10.15, and Young won the 500 freestyle with a mark of 56.89. Mayo and Young also joined forces with sophomore Brynn Leslie and junior Haley Moriarity to win the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 2:12.32. That same unit teamed up again to win the 400 freestyle relay behind a time of 4:04.15.

Freshman Mia Amasino took third place in the 50 freestyle at 1:04.71 for the Indians. Freshman Alyssa Simione (2:20.65) and Leslie (2:27.88) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Mayo (2:18.70) and junior Julia Earle (2:44.16) came in second and third place, respectively, for the 200 individual medley. Young finished second in 500 freestyle (5:49.38), and Moriarity was second for the 100 butterfly (1:08.58).

Simione (1:14.14) and Leslie (1:14.23) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Rylan Jacobson (1:17.44) and Moriarity (1:17.69) took second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. The Indians’ 200 medley relay group of Simione, Young, Amasino, and Earle finished second in 2:12.32.
