Valley Girls’ Soccer Earns Two Draws; Volleyball Drops a Couple of Close Contests

Girls’ Soccer

The Valley Regional girls’ soccer squad moved within a win or a tie of qualifying for the Class M State Tournament after picking up two ties in as many games last week. The Warriors now stand at 5-2-2 on the season.

On Oct. 2, the Warriors earned a 3-3 tie in a road game against Portland, who was undefeated headed into the matchup. Valley saw Maddie Costello pick up a pair of goals in the draw, and she was assisted both times by Ava Duval. Sophia Surber scored Valley’s other goal in the contest, and it came off a corner kick.

Two days later, the Warriors played Old Lyme to a 2-2 tie at home. Valley’s goals were scored by Sam Calamari and Duval.

Boys’ Soccer

Valley played a pair of games last week and came away with a split on the slate. With these results the Warriors’ record moved to 5-3 on the season.

On Oct. 2, Valley scored a 1-0 home victory over Portland. Two days later, the Warriors dropped a 2-0 contest versus Old Lyme.

Volleyball

Valley took two narrow defeats as part of last week’s action. The losses dropped the Warriors’ record to 2-7 on the season.

On Oct. 2, Valley lost a 3-2 home contest against Haddam-Killingworth. Valley took the first set by a 25-13 score, then dropped the second set 27-25. H-K took the third set 25-23, but Valley rallied to get a 25-19 fourth set win. Unfortunately, the Cougars grabbed the 3-2 win with a 15-9 final set.

Madden Riley led the Warriors with seven kills to go with a block. Carlee Kirla provided four kills and two blocks. Alena Crosby added 23 assists and two aces. Emma Counter supplied 21 digs to lead Valley.

Two days later, the Warriors lost a 3-2 road contest against Hale-Ray. Valley took a 25-24 win in the first set, but Hale-Ray won a 25-23 second set. The Noises scored a 25-17 win in the third set, and Valley once again rallied with a 25-20 win in the fourth set to force a fifth. Hale-Ray narrowly won the fifth frame by a 17-15 tally.

Ava Boyles notched 10 kills, as did Riley. Boyles also provided an ace, a block, and seven digs. Crosby had 10 digs and 31 assists. Counter led the team in digs by far with 49 on the night. Riley and Jamie Pullin had a block apiece.

Football

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VR-OL) football team lost a 21-7 contest against Stafford-East Windsor-Somers (S-EW-S) last week. With the defeat, the Warriors’ record moved to 2-2 on the season.

On Oct. 5, Head Coach Tim King’s squad was looking to rebound after its first loss of the year. S-EW-S managed to scored first with a touchdown and extra point in the second quarter to make it 7-0. Later in the quarter, the Bulldogs added another TD and PAT to pull ahead 14-0 by halftime.

The Warriors drew within a single score with a touchdown and extra point in the third to make it 14-7, but S-EW-S scored again in the fourth to bring it to the 21-7 final.

Up next for VR-OL is a home contest against Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman on Saturday, Oct. 12. Kick off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Valley Regional High School.
