North Haven Volleyball Sweeps Week; Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey Grab First Wins

Volleyball

The North Haven volleyball team played three matches last week and came away with a trio of victories. The Indians posted wins over divisional opponents Foran and West Haven and then notched a victory over Wilbur Cross during last week’s action. North Haven leveled its record at 4-4 on the season with these results.

The Indians started off their week by hitting the road to take on Foran in a Southern Connecticut Conference Hammonasset Division contest on Oct. 1. North Haven defeated the Lions by the final score of 3-1 to get its first divisional win of the year. The Indians dropped the first set, but came back to get the victory behind scores of 19-25, 28-26, 25-18, 25-13.

Junior Alex Ferriouolo had eight digs with six aces for the Indians. Senior Melissa Seidemann had eight kills to go with two blocks, while senior Aubrey Reyes contributed six kills and three blocks in the match.

The very next day, North Haven hosted West Haven for a Hammonasset matchup and posted a 3-1 win at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. The Indians defeated the Blue Devils behind set scores of 25-12, 25-15, 23-25, 25-7 to improve to 2-2 in divisional play.

Junior Lily Pollard put forth a big performance by dishing out 17 assists to go with four digs and nine aces. Senior Eryn Sheeley had six kills with four aces and one block in the victory. Senior Ally Vauiso added six digs and three aces for Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s squad.

North Haven finished up its week by netting a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-17) victory over Wilbur Cross in New Haven on Oct. 4. Sheeley had three kills and six aces, Seidemann chipped in with six kills, and Ferriouolo dealt out 10 aces to help North Haven defeat the Governors.

Boys’ Soccer

The Indians had a nice week that saw them notch their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory versus Career-Hillhouse. North Haven went on to earn a 2-2 tie against Sheehan to move to 1-4-3 on the year.

The Indians hosted Career-Hillhouse on Oct. 1 and won the game by the final score of 3-2 at North Haven Middle School. Junior Luke Franco scored all three goals for North Haven in the victory. Franco netted a goal on an assist from senior Pablo Moschcovich to give the Indians a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Franco scored his second goal on assists by senior Nick Nesdale and junior Eduardo Cienfuegos. Franco completed his hat trick by scoring his third goal on an assist from Cienfuegos.

On Oct. 4, North Haven played a road game versus Sheehan. The Indians picked up a point by battling the Titans to a 2-2 tie at Riccitelli Field in Wallingford.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven took two defeats in last week’s games and now has a record of 1-6 this season.

On Oct. 2, the Indians dropped a 2-1 home decision to Sacred Heart Academy at North Haven Middle School. Three days later, North Haven took a 3-1 loss against Sheehan in a road game. Senior Julia Raposo scored North Haven’s goal on a penalty kick in the game.

Field Hockey

North Haven picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Hamden last week. The Indians hosted the Green Dragons on Oct. 4 and posted a 1-0 shutout at North Haven Middle School.

Senior Christina DeAngelo scored the only goal of the game with just 2:20 remaining to lift the Indians to the victory. Senior goalie Sophia Aquaro made 10 saves in the cage for Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s club.

Earlier in the week, North Haven took an 8-0 road loss against Amity on Oct. 1. The Indians have a record of 1-9 on the year.

Football

North Haven was on the bye week for Week 4. The Indians’ next game will be against fellow SCC Tier 1 opponent West Haven on Friday, Oct. 11. The game takes place at Ken Strong Stadium at West Haven High School at 7 p.m. North Haven enters the matchup with an overall record of 1-2 and is 0-1 in SCC Tier 1. West Haven is 0-3 overall and 0-1 in SCC Tier 1.

Girls’ Cross Country

North Haven sent several runners to compete at the Neubauer Invitational that took place at Sheehan High School on Oct. 2.

Senior Reagan Forbes led the pack for North Haven by finishing in ninth place with a time of 23:07 at the meet. Freshman Payton Orosco finished in 24th place by running a time of 25:15 for the Indians. Sophomore Caitlyn McFarland came in 48th place (28:28), junior Taya Stanley finished in 55th (30:13), sophomore Sophia Melillo took 56th place (30:30), and sophomore Riley Minns finished in 58th place (31:51).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians were represented by several athletes at last week’s Neubauer Invitational.

Junior Patrick Rourke ran a time of 18:46 to finish in 14th place for North Haven. Fellow junior Jack Murphy finished 15th with a time of 18:55, while freshman Tyler Wurm came in 16th place at 18:58. Sophomore Jake Hines took 25th place with a mark of 19:19. Also competing for North Haven at the meet were sophomore Aaron Barbiero (33rd, 20:00), sophomore Mike Rubano (36th, 20:09), junior Nick Howlett (39th, 20:16), and senior Aidan Bergin (48th, 20:44).
