Indians Get Big Win Over Lauralton Hall, Now Stand at 6-0

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team made a major splash when the Indians earned their first win versus Lauralton Hall in program history last week. On Oct. 1, the Indians traveled to Milford to face the Crusaders and prevailed by the final score of 98-88 at Foran High School.

Later in the week, North Haven hosted Foran and claimed a 97-79 victory over the Lions at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Oct. 4. With these two wins, the Indians remained undefeated in the 2019 season by raising their overall record to 6-0.

North Haven posted first-place finishes in eight events on its way to defeating Lauralton Hall. Senior Angela Gambardella took first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.06 and also claimed top honors in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.72. Junior Maddie Bergin also finished first in two individual events. Bergin won the 50 freestyle in 24.87 seconds to go with a victory in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 54.24. Both of these times marked season-best performances for Bergin.

Gambardella and Bergin also swam on a pair of triumphant relays for North Haven in the meet. The Indians’ 200 medley relay of sophomore Brooke Nebor, Gambardella, freshman Mikayla Rapuano, and Bergin finished in first place at 1:55.05. North Haven’s 200 freestyle relay quartet of Gambardella, sophomore Taya Laborde, junior Riley Jooss, and Bergin came in first place by recording a time of 1:44.20.

One week after breaking her own school record in the diving competition, senior Ava Santacroce earned another first-place finish in the event by totaling a score of 222.30 points. Rapuano finished first in the 100 butterfly by timing in at 1:04.56 for Head Coach Martha Phelan’s squad.

North Haven also recorded a slew of second- and third-place performances in its win over Lauralton Hall. Freshman Alice Scalmani took second place in both the 200 individual medley (2:23.55) and the 100 breaststroke with a season best of 1:13.06. Rapuano came in second place in the 100 backstroke at 1:05.20.

Jooss finished third for the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 2:04.37 and placed third in the 500 freestyle at 5:40.91. Junior Molly Coyle swam a time of 1:08.63 to place third in the 100 butterfly.

North Haven’s 200 medley relay of sophomore Taya Laborde, Scalmani, Coyle, and junior Alyssa Laborde finished in third place (2:04.50); the 200 freestyle relay of Scalmani, Alyssa Laborde, sophomore Giulia Faulkner, and sophomore Grace Finch took third (1:53.55); and the 400 freestyle relay of Rapuano, Faulkner, Nebor, and Jooss also finished third (4:01.84).

Faulkner recorded season-best times in the 200 freestyle (2:08.35) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.15) at the meet. Other athletes who swam season-best times were senior Gillian Regan in the 200 freestyle (2:17.11), senior Mackenzie Montesi in the 200 IM (2:37.70), Nebor for the 100 butterfly (1:10.18), and Taya Laborde in the 50 freestyle (26.88) and 100 freestyle (58.04).

North Haven also turned in several excellent performances in its win versus Foran later in the week. Sophomore Chandler Ceste-Martinez scored a lifetime-best total of 163.80 points in the diving competition for the Indians. Freshman Tara Stoeffler posted season-best times in the 200 freestyle (2:20.60), the 500 freestyle (6:16.04), and the 200 IM (2:44.30). Regan finished with season bests in both the 500 freestyle (5:59.80) and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.24).

Also swimming season-best times were Jooss in the 200 IM (2:22.63), Faulkner in the 100 butterfly (1:08.57), Alyssa Laborde for the 200 freestyle (2:16.75), Montesi in the 100 backstroke (1:10.53), sophomore Abrielle Osborne in the 200 IM (2:45.67), and Taya Laborde for the 100 backstroke (1:08.13).

Bergin recorded a season-best time of 1:14.46 in the 100 breaststroke during the victory. The following athletes also swam season bests: Coyle in the 100 butterfly (1:08.52), Nebor in the 100 freestyle (1:02.43), Grimm in the 100 freestyle (1:08.53), freshman Victoria Panchik in the 100 freestyle (1:10.03), senior Abby Kirtland in the 100 backstroke (1:12.76), and freshman Makenzie Alogna in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.46).

Next up, North Haven has a home meet versus Hand at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
