Huskies’ Volleyball Takes Two; Field Hockey Shuts Out Somers

Volleyball

The Morgan volleyball team secured two wins last week in as many games. With the victories, the Huskies improved their record to 3-6 on the season.

On Oct. 2, Morgan scored a big 3-2 road win against Old Lyme. The Huskies took the first set by a 25-23 score. Old Lyme scored a 25-18 second set win. Morgan went up 2-1 with a 25-16 third set, and the Wildcats won a 25-13 fourth set to even the score. Morgan took the 3-2 win after a 15-12 fifth set.

Alexandra Kelly led the team with nine kills, and she added three aces, and two blocks. Maggie Mahoney had eight kills, six assists, and two blocks. Emma Iovene led the team in digs with 25, while Sara Kuever led with 29 assists. Charlotte Davenport had 11 digs, four kills, and four aces. Lauren Kuever added five kills.

Two days later, the Huskies scored a 3-1 (25-14, 27-25, 26-28, 25-14) win against North Branford. Kelly had an outstanding mark of 10 aces to go with six kills and four blocks. Lauren Kuever notched six kills and seven aces, while Colleen Edwards also had six kills to go with five aces and nine digs. Sarah Kuever added 23 assists, and Fransesca Tino and Madeline Durham had 20 digs and 14 digs, respectively.

Field Hockey

The Morgan field hockey team played a pair of games last week and came away with a split on the slate. With these results the Huskies record moved to 4-3-1 on the season.

On Oct. 1, Head Coach Emily Lisy’s squad hosted Somers at the Indian River Complex and picked up a 7-0 win.

The Huskies got their first goal of the game from Aryn McQuarrie off an assist from Nori Lopez. Lopez picked up the second goal off a helper from Emma Farrell. Morgan’s third score of the game was an unassisted goal by McQuarrie.

Delaney Mastriano picked up unassisted goal, as well, and Lopez scored Morgan’s fifth goal of the game on assist from Mary Minichino. Lopez finished off the hat trick off a helper from Emma Farrell, and McQuarrie also notched a hat trick when she scored Morgan’s final goal, unassisted.

Abigail Gordon made five saves for Morgan in net.

Two days later, Morgan lost a 2-0 road contest against Old Saybrook.

Girls Soccer

Morgan picked up a win on a three-game slate last week. With a win and two losses, the Huskies’ record moved to 5-3-1 on the season.

On Sept. 30, Morgan lost a 2-0 home contest against East Lyme. The game stayed scoreless most of the way until East Lyme scored in the 72nd and again in the 77th minute to take the 2-0 win. East Lyme outshot the Huskies 13-7 and Natalie Navarro made 11 saves in net.

Two days later, Morgan dropped a 2-1 road decision versus Old Lyme. Old Lyme took a 1-0 edge in the 9th minute of the game, but Morgan drew even three minutes later with a goal from Taylor Wyatt off a Maddie Stopkoski assist. Old Lyme took the 2-1 lead in the 27th minute and the score would remain through to the final whistle.

Morgan and Old Lyme had 10 shots on goal apiece, and Navarro made eight saves.

On Oct. 4, Morgan secured a 4-1 home win versus Westbrook at the Indian River Complex. Carley Schmidt scored all four of the Huskies’ goals in the game. Schmidt’s first goal came at 8:05 off an assist from Maura Kelly, and less than a minute later, that same combo connected again to make it 2-0.

Westbrook made it 2-1 at 23:13 and the score would remain until the second half.

Schmidt notched her hat trick at 49:11 off another Kelly assist, and three minutes later Schmidt scored the final goal of the contest off an assist from Stopkoski. Morgan out shot Westbrook 15-3, and Emma Lindsay made two saves in net for Head Coach Steve Sullivan’s squad.

Football

Morgan took a 33-6 defeat at home against Ellington last week. The loss dropped the Huskies record to 0-3 on the season as they search for their first win.

Up next for Morgan is a road contest against Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby on Saturday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Windsor Locks High School.
