Volleyball

The Valley Regional volleyball team played a pair of games last week and took home a split on the slate. These results led to the Warriors’ record moving to 2-5 on the season.

On Sept. 23, the Warriors claimed a 3-1 home victory over North Branford. Valley took the first set by a 25-17 score, and followed that up with a 25-20 second set. North Branford bounced back in the third frame with a 25-21 score, but Valley closed it out in the fourth set by a score of 25-20.

Senior Carlee Kirla led the team with 10 kills in the victory and added five aces and 14 receptions as well. Alena Crosby provided 26 assists, four kills and two aces, while Emma Counter led in digs (20) and aces (6).

Two days later, Valley dropped a close road contest versus East Hampton. The match was hard fought all the way through with the Bellringers outlasting the Warriors in the 3-2 (25-23, 25-14, 14-25, 25-27, 15-6) win. After being down 2-0, Valley attempted the rally, but couldn’t get over the hump in the final frame.

Junior Ava Boyles and sophomore Madison Neviaser tied for the team lead in kills with seven. Boyles also tied for team lead in aces alongside Emma Counter with three apiece. Senior Maddon Riley blocked five shots—the most on the Warriors. Meanwhile Counter led the squad with 28 digs. Crosby had 19 assists in the loss.

Field Hockey

The Valley Regional field hockey team snagged two wins last week on a slate of three games. The Warriors first and second wins on the year improved their record to 2-4 on the season.

On Sept. 23, Valley took a 6-0 road loss at perennial Shoreline powerhouse North Branford. Three days later, Valley posted that same 6-0 score in a win on the road versus Somers. On Sept. 28, the Warriors added their second win of the year with a 3-1 road victory against Woodstock Academy.

Girls’ Soccer

Valley played two games last week and came away with a split of the pair. With these results, Head Coach Lauren MacDonald’s squad saw its record move to 5-2 on the campaign.

On Sept. 23, the Warriors lost a 6-3 home contest versus Haddam-Killingworth.

Three days later, Valley earned a 2-1 home win versus North Branford. The Warriors were bolstered by goals from junior Maddie Costello and senior Sam Calamari.

Football

The Warriors took their first loss of the season last week when they went up against Coginchaug/East Hampton/Hale-Ray (C-EH-HR) on Sept. 28. Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VR-OL) dropped a 39-14 home decision versus the Blue Devils to move to 2-1 on the season.

The Blue Devils got out to a hot start and didn’t let up over the course of the game. C-EH-HR put six points on the board in the first quarter and extended the lead to 20-0 by halftime. In the second half, the Blue Devils continued to grow their lead with a 12-point third quarter compared to the Warriors seven points to make it 32-7. Both teams scored touchdowns and successful extra points in the fourth to bring the score to the 39-14 final.

Up next for the Warriors is a battle at Stafford High School, where they will square off against Stafford-East Windsor-Somers on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
