After falling into an early hole, the Hand football squad stormed back and rolled to a 56-13 victory over non-conference opponent Wethersfield in a road game on Sept. 27. The Tigers now have a record of 3-0 on the year and have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 160-33.
Hand trailed Wethersfield 6-0 after the first quarter, but erased that deficit by scoring 29 points during the second quarter. Senior running back Colin McCabe scored on touchdown runs of 3 and 2 yards to help Hand take a 15-6 lead. Following another TD by Wethersfield, the Tigers rattled off 41 unanswered points on their way to another convincing victory. Senior quarterback Phoenix Billings ran for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 23-13 and then threw a 27-yard pass to Ethan Haberman for a 29-13 lead at intermission.
Touchdowns from Billings (14-yard run), Shane Reiner (3-yard run), and McCabe (4-yard run) gave Hand a 49-13 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Jesse Lutz finished off the win for the Tigers by scoring on 5-yard TD run during the final frame. Isaiah McNeilly kicked four extra points in the victory. He also ran for a 2-point conversion and threw a 2-point pass to Conner Quinn.
In addition to being the top-ranked team in the state, Hand is also ranked No. 28 in the nation by MaxPreps. The Tigers will go for their 28th win in a row when they host Wilbur Cross on Friday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Strong Field at the Surf Club.
Boys’ Soccer
The Tigers picked up three more wins last week, highlighted by a 3-1 home victory over Fairfield Prep on Sept. 28. With these results, Hand raised its record to 5-0-1 this season.
Junior attacker Scott Testori scored all three goals for Hand in its win against Prep, converting a pair of penalty kicks just 94 seconds apart early in the second half. Testori also headed home a goal just four minutes into the contest to get the Tigers’ offense going.
Earlier in the week, Hand notched a 7-0 shutout over West Haven on Sept. 24 and then earned a 3-1 win over Law on Sept. 26.
Girls’ Soccer
Hand improved to 3-2-1 this year by earning two wins and a tie during recent action.
On Sept. 24, the Tigers shut out Cross by the final score of 8-0. Two days later, Hand battled West Haven to a 1-1 draw. Hand finished its week by claiming a 1-0 victory over Shelton on Sept. 28.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Tigers took two of three in a quad-meet at Eisenhower Park on Sept. 24. Hand notched victories versus Lauralton Hall (21-34) and Mercy (21-33) to go with a defeat against Law (24-36) at the meet. Hand now has a record of 6-1 on the season.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Tigers stand at 4-2 after winning two of their three matches last week.
Hand earned a 3-0 victory over North Haven on Sept. 23 and then defeated North Branford by that same score two days later.
On Sept. 27, the Tigers took a 3-0 loss to Guilford behind set scores of 25-9, 25-22, and 25-23. Allie Nelson had 10 kills with six digs in the defeat.
Field Hockey
The Tigers two of their three games last week by defeating Amity and Sacred Heart Academy to go with a loss versus Norwalk. Hand is now 5-2 on the season.
Grace Hartmann’s first-half goal on an assist from Jacqui Sandor led the Tigers to a 1-0 win at Amity on Sept. 23. Maddie Kilduff played the net in the first half and made one save, after which Megan Hart made two saves in the cage during the second half.
Then on Sept. 27, Hand defeated Sacred Heart Academy by a 3-0 score. Maeve Connors scored two goals for the Tigers, while Reilly Dolan had the other goal. Sandor, Grace Goddard and Tessie Sheehan handed out one assist apiece.
Hand completed its week by dropping a 4-1 contest to Norwalk on Sept. 28. With Hand trailing 3-0, Amy Woods got the Tigers on the board by scoring a goal on an assist from Carly Barba. Kilduff and Hart combined to make three saves in the game.
