Santacroce Breaks Her School Record for Diving; North Haven Volleyball Gets First Win

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls' swimming and diving team posted recent victories over West Haven and Guilford to run their record to 4-0 on the campaign.

On Sept. 24, North Haven claimed a 95-81 road win against West Haven. Three days later, the Indians hosted Guilford and prevailed by a 92-74 score at Walter Gawrych Community Pool.

In the Guilford meet, senior Ava Santacroce broke her own school record for the 1-meter diving competition. Santacroce scored a lifetime-best total of 236.00 points for a six-dive performance to set the record again.

North Haven saw several swimmers post season-best times against Guilford. Senior Angela Gambardella swam a season-best time of 2:00.80 in the 200 freestyle, while junior Riley Jooss finished with season bests in the 200 freestyle (2:05.47) and the 100 freestyle (57.58).

Other athletes who swam season-best times included freshman Mikayla Rapuano in the 200 freestyle (2:09.34) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.44), junior Molly Coyle in the 200 individual medley (2:35.55) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.78), sophomore Abrielle Osborne in the 200 IM (2:44.32), junior Maddie Bergin in the 50 freestyle (24.90), and sophomore Brooke Nebor in the 50 freestyle (27.40) and 100 backstroke (1:08.39).

Also swimming season-best times for the Indians were sophomore Olivia Grimm in the 50 freestyle (31.44) and the 100 freestyle (1:09.51), junior Alyssa Laborde in the 100 freestyle (1:00.88) and the 100 breaststroke (1:24.31), sophomore Taya Laborde in the 50 freestyle (27.31) and 100 freestyle (59.31), senior Mackenzie Montesi in the 500 freestyle (6:08.05), and freshman Makenzie Alogna in the 100 freestyle (1:05.57). Additionally, freshman Alice Scalmani posted a lifetime-best mark of 2:21.76 in the 200 IM.

On Friday, Oct. 4, North Haven will be holding its Pink Meet when the Indians host Foran at Walter Gawrych Community Pool at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 6, North Haven is hosting its annual Lion Heart Lap-a-thon fundraiser at the Beckerman Athletic Center in Hamden from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The Indians will be joined at the fundraiser by the swim teams from Hamden, Amity, and Trumbull high schools, as well as the Hamden Hall Aquatic Club. Volleyball

The Indians earned their first win of the season when they posted a 3-0 victory at Lauralton Hall last week. The Indians also took two defeats on the week and have a record of 1-4 this fall.

On Sept. 23, North Haven lost a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-22) decision at Hand. Senior Aubrey Reyes recorded six kills and had four blocks, junior Alex Ferriouolo had 17 digs with three aces, and sophomore Eveani Okwuosa had seven kills for North Haven.

Two days later, the Indians earned their first victory of the year with 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) win at Lauralton Hall. Junior Lily Pollard had 21 assists with two kills and two aces for the Indians. Okwuosa posted 13 kills, while senior Melissa Seidemann had seven kills and two blocks.

On Sept. 27, North Haven took a 3-0 loss at SCC Hammonasset Division opponent Cheshire in its third road match of the week. The Indians moved to 0-2 in divisional play with the defeat.

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven picked up a couple of points by earning two ties in last week’s action. The Indians played three road games versus SCC Housatonic Division opponents last week and came away with two ties and a loss to move to 0-4-2 this year.

North Haven started off its week by taking a 6-2 defeat in Cheshire on Sept. 24. Two days later, the Indians battled West Haven to a 1-1 tie in another divisional game. Then on Sept. 28, North Haven was back on the road to face Housatonic squad Law and earned a 1-1 draw to go to 0-2-2 in divisional play this season.

Girls’ SoccerThe Indians lost a pair of divisional contests at North Haven Middle School last week and to move to 1-4 overall with a record of 0-3 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division.

North Haven took a 5-0 home loss against Mercy on Sept. 26. Two days later, the Indians hosted Foran for another divisional duel and dropped a 3-1 decision.

Field Hockey

North Haven lost three games last week to move to 0-8 on the season.

On Sept. 23, the Indians took a 1-0 defeat versus Sheehan on the road. The following day, North Haven lost to Branford by a 9-0 score in another road game. Then on Sept. 27, the Indians hosted Mercy and took a 1-0 loss at North Haven Middle School.
