The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ cross country team competed in two meets on Sept. 21. While the varsity squad traveled to Bear Mountain, New York for the Suffern Invitational, the rest of the Cougars ran at the Connecticut River Valley Invitational in Cromwell.
The H-K varsity team competed against more than 70 schools from New York and New Jersey on a challenging three-mile course at the Suffern Invitational. The Cougars scored 79 points to finish in third place in the Varsity C Race. Junior Matt Jennings finished in third place with a time of 16:18 for H-K. Jennings was followed across the finish line by senior captain Christian Uzwiak, who place eighth in 16:43, along with juniors Sean Rutledge (19th, 17:45) and Fisher Harris (23rd, 17:32). Sophomore Caleb Freeman (26th, 17:47), junior Julian Spector (27th, 17:47), and senior captain Griffin Robinson (30th, 17:56) rounded out the pack for the Cougars.
At the Connecticut River Valley Invitational, H-K’s JV team competed against 15 other squads from the state and took first place in its race. Sophomore Greyson Merola earned runner-up honors with a time of 17:39 for the 3.1-mile course. Senior captain Luke Sodergren (3rd, 17:41), sophomore Tyler Robinson (4th, 17:44), senior Michael Coleman (6th, 17:58), freshman Mason Gorham (8th, 18:06), and sophomore Andrew Hedges (10th, 18:06) also competed for the Cougars.
Then on Sept. 24, H-K swept the competition at the Shoreline Conference League Meet that was held on the 3.1-mile course at John Winthrop Middle School in Deep River. H-K defeated Morgan, Coginchaug, and North Branford by identical 15-50 scores to go with a 21-40 win versus Valley Regional and a 25-34 victory over Cromwell for a record of 5-0 in dual-meet competition.
The Cougars’ top four finishers all timed in at 18:58 at the meet. Uzwiak finished in fourth and was followed by Jennings (5th), Freeman (6th), and Sean Rutledge (7th).
Girls’ Cross Country
The Cougars came in third place with 97 points scored for the Varsity C Race at the Suffern Invitational in New York on Sept. 21.
Junior Meara Bodak took seventh place for H-K by running a time of 20:37 on the three-mile course. Bodak was joined on the pathways by senior captain Julia Callis (24th, 22:02), sophomore Brianna Minervino (26th, 22:12), senior captain Lauren D’Amico (27th, 22:18), and sophomore Ava DiMatteo (30th, 22:51).
On that same day, the Cougars’ JV team took second place at the Connecticut River Valley Invitational. Freshman Isabel Berardino came in first place by posting a mark of 22:31 for the 5K course. Senior Jasmine Adelberg finished fourth at 24:09, while junior Kathy Melgar placed seventh with a 24:19.
On Sept. 24, the Cougars claimed five victories at the Shoreline Conference League meet. H-K defeated Morgan and North Branford by the score of 15-50 and also notched wins over Coginchaug (20-41), Cromwell (15-46), and Valley Regional (25-33).
Julia Callis finished third by timing in 23:26 for the 5K. Bodak (4th, 23:28), D’Amico (6th, 23:33), DiMatteo (8th, 23:48), and Minervino (9th, 24:06) were the other runners for the Cougars, who have a record of 5-0.
Girls’ Soccer
H-K won all four of its games last week to improve its record to 6-2 in the 2019 season. The Cougars earned a 6-3 win over Valley Regional on Sept. 23, blanked Coginchaug by a 4-0 score on Sept. 25, posted a 5-0 shutout versus Capital Prep the next day, and notched a 5-1 victory against East Hampton on Sept. 28.
Two days after H-K beat Valley Regional, Sophia Torello earned the shutout in net by making 11 saves when the Cougars defeated Coginchaug. Kedarjah Lewis scored two goals for H-K on penalty kicks. Morgan Madore also converted a PK, while Leah Sosnowski added a goal in the 4-0 win.
Facing Capital Prep, H-K scored five goals during the first half on its way to 5-0 triumph. Scarlett Strom and Jill Henry had two goals apiece for the Cougars, who also saw Madore score a goal. Goalkeeper Kelsey Lonergan made one save for the shutout.
In the East Hampton game, H-K took a 2-0 lead into halftime and then outscored the Bellringers 3-1 during the second half. Lewis and Madore netted two goals apiece, and Autumn Walton also found the back of the net for the Cougars. Torello came up with six stops for another win in net.
Boys’ Soccer
H-K lost two contests last week and now has a record of 1-5 this season.
On Sept. 24, H-K took a 2-1 loss to Valley Regional on Sept. 24. Two days later, the Cougars lost to Coginchaug by a 2-0 score.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Cougars gained a split of four matchups last week to stand at 5-3 this fall.
H-K took a 3-2 loss to Cromwell on Sept. 23, but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Old Lyme on Sept. 25 and a 3-0 victory against North Branford two days after that. H-K finished the week by losing a 3-0 match versus Cromwell on Sept. 28.
Field Hockey
The Cougars picked up a point when they played Lyman Hall to a 3-3 tie on Sept. 23. H-K went on to drop a 1-0 decision against Old Saybrook on Sept. 26 to move to 0-4-1 on the year.
