East Haven Football Goes to 3-0 by Routing Rocky Hill; Volleyball Beats Career in Quinnipiac Matchup

Football

The East Haven football team improved to 3-0 on the season after recording another dominant non-conference victory last week. On Sept. 27, the Yellowjackets traveled to Rocky Hill and defeated the Terriers by the final score of 44-6. Senior Mike Castellano ran for 87 yards and three touchdowns, while senior Jacob Araujo and junior Dave Amatruda each had one rushing TD. Amatruda also scored a touchdown on a kickoff return for the Yellowjackets.

Castellano opened the scoring for East Haven with a 6-yard TD run, after which junior Eric Araujo booted home the extra point for a 7-0 lead. On East Haven’s next possession, Amatruda scored on a 14-yard touchdown rush. There was a botched snap on the extra point, but junior quarterback Trey Garea scooped the ball and connected with senior captain Jake Marquardt for the 2-point conversion to make it 15-0.

After Rocky Hill scored a touchdown early in the second quarter, Amatruda took the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to the house to put the Yellowjackets up 22-6. Later in the frame, Jacob Araujo sprinted home for a 36-yard touchdown run to give the Yellowjackets a 30-6 advantage at halftime.

Castellano added touchdown runs of 13 and 6 yards in the second half to help East Haven finish off its lopsided victory. Junior Alex Durate had 63 rushing yards, Jacob Araujo ran for 36 yards, junior Eric Araujo added 16 yards on the ground for East Haven. Garea completed two passes for 58 yards and also ran for 11 yards. Senior Kaymond Quattlebaum hauled in a 30-yard reception, and Marquardt had a 28-yard reception on the night.

Next up for the Yellowjackets is a key SCC Tier 3 matchup against Guilford, which is also 3-0. The game will be played at East Haven High School on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Yellowjackets improved to 3-2 overall after splitting a pair of matchups last week. East Haven moved to 2-0 in SCC Quinnipiac action by defeating Career and then took a loss to Seymour in a non-conference contest.

On Sept. 23, East Haven hosted Career and won the contest by the final score of 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18). Senior Bella Ragaini had 20 assists for the Yellowjackets. Senior Eliza Goldberg chipped in with seven kills and three blocks, while junior Taylor Salato finished with seven kills in the victory.

Three days later, East Haven took a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-20) defeat versus Seymour on the road. Ragaini handed out 20 assists, while Goldberg and Salato had seven kills apiece in the loss.

Girls’ Soccer

The Easties stand a 1-3-2 after getting a win, taking a loss, and earning a tie in three recent divisional games.

East Haven went on the road lost a 1-0 contest at Cheshire on Sept. 23. Then on Sept. 26, the Yellowjackets claimed their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Cross. Two days later, East Haven went to West Haven and battled the Blue Devils to a 0-0 draw. The Yellowjackets are now 1-2-1 in SCC Housatonic play this season.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven lost three divisional matchups last week and is now 0-4 on the year.

On Sept. 24, the Yellowjackets took a 7-0 defeat in Shelton. Two days later, East Haven dropped a 5-0 decision versus Sheehan. On Sept. 28, the Easties played Xavier in their home opener and lost by the final score of 7-0 to move to 0-3 in the SCC Housatonic Division.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Yellowjackets hosted Shelton on Sept. 24 and took an 89-81 loss at East Haven Town Pool. East Haven-Wilbur Cross has a record of 0-3 on the year.

Freshman Aby Brooks dropped more than 30 seconds off of her personal-best time in the 500 freestyle at the meet. Junior Alora McCarroll set a new personal-best mark in the 200 individual medley by clocking in at 2:27.95.
