Warriors Shut Out Cromwell-Portland, 21-0; Boys’ Soccer Splits a Pair

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VR-OL football team picked up a huge win last week when they faced off with Cromwell-Portland on Sept. 20. The Warriors defeated the Panthers in a 21-0 shutout to assert themselves against a perennial Pequot Conference rival. Head Coach Tim King’s squad moved its record to 2-0 on the season with the victory.

The game was tied 0-0 until there were eight seconds left in the first half. After a VR-OL interception at the 40-yard line with a little over a minute left, the Warriors were able to put together a well executed 60-yard drive to the end zone. James Marsden caught a ball from Jack Cox to get the score and the extra point made it 7-0.

The Warriors kicked off to the Panthers in the third quarter, and Valley quickly got the ball back thanks to a quality defensive stand. Offensive coordinator Kevin Woods called for a fade route with a deep pass, and Cox hit Marsden for another touchdown. The game was a battle the rest of the way, but the nail in the coffin was a 4-yard touchdown run into the end zone from Justin Badolato.

The Warriors ended the day with 306 yards of offense compared to Cromwell-Portland’s 150 yards. Plus, VR-OL had five interceptions and a fumble recovery to its credit. .

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors played a pair of games last week and Head Coach Mick Fearon’s squad came away with a split of the two games. Valley’s record moved to to an even 2-2 on the year after the week’s results.

On Sept. 17, the Warriors went up against Westbrook and lost a 2-1 home contest. The game was pretty even with a scoreless first half, and Westbrook’s goalkeeper made three outstanding saves in the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, Westbrook converted a penalty kick. After that came a free kick that went over the goalie to make it 2-0. Valley battled and tried to pressure as much as possible, but only managed to get a goal with a minute left in the game. Cameron Frazier had the goal off an assist from Ryan Shasha. Valley goalie Baron Schafer made eight saves in the loss.

Three days later, Valley secured a shutout victory versus Cromwell. The Panthers applied a lot of pressure at the game’s outset, but was unable to sustain that pressure and defend well. Jake Burdick ran the ball up the left side of the pitch and crossed the ball to Ryan Silva who scored.

After the first half, the score was 1-0. In the second half, Ryan Shasha scored a goal off an assist from Ryan Shasha seven minutes into the half. Then just a minute later, Jaden Vega knocked the ball in to Jake Burdick who scored too.

Volleyball

Valley picked up its first win on the season last week in a slate of three games. The Warriors ended up 1-2 on the week, and that moved Valley’s record to 1-3 on the season.

On Sept. 16, Head Coach Kathy Scott’s squad lost a close 3-2 home contest versus Coginchaug. Valley took the first two sets in the match winning by 25-16 and 25-13 respectively. After that, the Blue Devils won the next three sets in a row by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 15-13.

Ava Boyles led the Warriors in kills with 12 and she also had five aces, two blocks, and eight digs. Emma Counter dug out 35 balls, while Alena Crosby tallied 30 assists and eight aces.

Two days later, the Warriors dropped a 3-1 home decision against Cromwell. Again, Valley got off to a good start with a first-set win at 25-10, then Cromwell took the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-11.

Mackensie Neviaser led the team in kills with 10. Counter had the digs covered with 30, while Alena Crosby supplied 25 assists and five aces.

On Sept. 20, Valley got its first victory in a 3-1 triumph over Old Lyme. The Warriors took the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 respectively. Then Old Lyme squeezed its way to a 25-23 win in the third set, but Valley closed out its first win with a 25-19 fourth set.

Boyles scored 13 kills and five aces, meanwhile Counter managed 31 digs. Crosby had 37 assists and four aces.

Field Hockey

The Warriors played two games last week and lost both of them. Valley tried to find its footing, but had a tough time creating offense. On Sept. 18, the Warriors lost a 2-0 home contest against Old Saybrook. Two days later, Valley lost a 1-0 home decision versus Westbrook. With these results, the Warriors record moved to 0-3 on the season.
