Indians See Success Across the Board During Big Week

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer squad claimed a 2-0 win versus Xavier on Sept. 17 and then defeated Hamden by that same 2-0 score on Sept. 20. With these results, the Indians improved their record to 2-0-1 on the year.

The Indians scored one goal in each half on their way to defeating Xavier. Anthony Ippolito found the back of the net during the first half, and Cal Stephens netted a goal in the second half. Senior captain John Kosh notched the shutout in net for Guilford.

Kosh earned another shutout in the Hamden victory. Once again, Stephens and Ippolito scored the Indians’ goals. Will Johnston and Stephens both handed out an assist for Head Coach Curtis Gullette’s club.

Field Hockey

The Indians claimed a pair of victories last week to improve to 3-0 this year.

Ava Bucci, Ella Stanley, and Maddie Epke all scored two goals apiece when Guilford notched a 10-0 triumph at Lyman Hall on Sept. 17.

Guilford returned to action on Sept. 19 and earned a 2-0 win at Hamden. Bucci had a goal and an assist, while Epke also scored a goal for Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s squad. Goalkeeper Eve Young made three saves to get the shutout in the cage.

Volleyball

Guilford recorded recent 3-0 victories over North Haven, Harding, and Sheehan to run its record to 5-0 on the year.

Guilford blanked North Haven by the final score of 3-0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-21) on Sept. 17. Emma Appleman paced the Indians with 13 kills and 10 digs to go along with two assists. Juliet Young (9 digs, 4 assists), Eva Ott Hill (14 assists), and Emily Brouder (3 kills, 3 blocked shots) also contributed for Guilford in the victory.

On Sept. 18, the Indians notched a 3-0 win versus Harding behind set scores of 25-2, 25-13, and 25-16. Brouder had seven kills and two assists, while Carson Halbower added three kills in the match.

Guilford closed out its week with 3-0 victory over Sheehan on Sept. 20.

Football

Guilford won its second-consecutive contest with first-year head coach Anthony Salvati by posting a 40-20 victory over non-conference opponent Hartford Public on Sept. 20.

Senior running back Charles Walcott rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns for the Indians. Fellow senior Charles Schioppo ran for 115 yards and scored three TDs in the victory. Junior quarterback Aedan McDermott completed nine passes for 85 yards on the night.

Up next for the Indians is a non-conference matchup at Avon on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Senior captain Clara Wiesler set a course record with a time of 20:03 to lead the Indians to a sweep of a quad-meet at Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford on Sept. 17.

Guilford swept the contest with wins over Amity, Hillhouse, and host Lyman Hall to bring its record to 6-0. Joining Wiesler in the Guilford pack were Julia Antony (4th, 20:38), Yanli Muhs (5th, 20:40), Olivia Skapczynski (8th, 20:58), Emma Bonz (9th, 20:59) and Clara Loughlin (10th, 20:59, 10th).

Boys’ Cross Country

Guilford took two out of three in a quad-meet on Sept. 17 before earning first-place honors at the Connecticut River Valley Invitational in Cromwell on Sept. 21. Head Coach Jonathan Rivera’s team now has a 5-1 record in dual-meet competition this fall

Guilford started its week by competing against three teams on the 2.9-mile course at Wharton Brook State Park. The Indians defeated Lyman Hall (15-48) and Hillhouse (15-48), while losing to Amity (25-30).

At the invitational in Cromwell, Ben Crair’s time of 16:50 put in him in 10th place for the race. Crair was followed across the finish line by Jacob Shiffrin (12th, 16:56), McKendry Eschinger (18th, 17:08), and Griffin Hughes (20th, 17:15).
