Rams’ Football Takes Defeat in First Game; Field Hockey Gains a Split

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team dropped its first contest of the year in a 41-20 loss against Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton (CR-HR-EH) on Sept. 14. OS-W dropped the home game against CR-HR-EH after falling behind early to the Blue Devils.

The first quarter ended even at a 7-7 tie, but the Blue Devils soon created some distance with a 12-point second quarter to take a 19-7 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the CR-HR-EH offense took off running scoring a total of 22 points to more than double its points from the first half to make it 41-7.

The Rams scored 13 in the fourth quarter, but the effort proved too little too late.

Up next for OS-W is a battle at home versus Rockville on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team, fresh off their Class S State title season in 2018, began the 2019 season with a bang by picking up a win against Portland. On Sept. 12, the Rams won a 2-0 road contest against the Highlanders to start their title defending season at 1-0.

Girls’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team had a pair of contests last week and began the year with two losses. The Rams are off to a tough 0-2 start, but the season is still young.

On Sept. 12, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 4-1 decision against the Warriors. Valley got out to a strong start picking up a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game, and by the end of the first half, the Rams trailed 3-0. Each team picked up a goal in the second half, but Valley had taken a decisive lead that Old Saybrook couldn’t overcome.

Two days later, the Rams headed to Portland where they took a 3-0 road loss to the Highlanders.

Field Hockey

The Rams played a pair of contests to open up the 2019 season and picked up a win and a loss in the short week. With the split, Old Saybrook’s record stands at 1-1 to begin the year.

On Sept. 12, the Rams went up against a formidable North Branford squad at home. Old Saybrook was unable to keep up with the Thunderbirds and lost in a 5-0 shutout.

Two days later, the Rams earned a big win against Waterford on the road. Old Saybrook outscored Waterford by a 6-1 margin to mark its first win on the campaign.
