North Haven Football Takes 14-7 Loss to Prep in Opener; Other Teams Start Seasons

Football

The North Haven football team opened up the 2019 season by taking a 14-7 defeat against Fairfield Prep in an SCC Tier 1 showdown at Vanacore Field on Sept. 13. The Indians scored the first touchdown of the game and held a 7-0 lead at halftime, but the Jesuits scored a pair of TDs in the second half and then hung on for the victory.

Senior Max Augustine put North Haven on the board when he rushed for a 9-yard touchdown with 5:38 to play in the first quarter. Junior Chase DiCarlo kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.

In the third quarter, Fairfield Prep used a 2-yard TD run to tie the game at 7-7. The Jesuits went ahead for good when they scored on a 5-yard touchdown rush to take a 14-7 advantage with 5:02 remaining in the contest.

Senior Corey Hooks carried the ball 27 times for 145 yards to lead the Indians’ ground game.

This week, North Haven is hosting Bunnell for a non-conference contest on Friday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Vanacore Field.

Boys’ Soccer

The Indians started off their year by hosting Amity at North Haven Middle School on Sept. 14. North Haven lost a 4-0 contest versus the Spartans in its season opener.

Led by third-year Head Coach Reid Chieffo, North Haven is competing in the SCC Housatonic Division with Hand, Cheshire, Law, and West Haven this year.

Last season, North Haven finished with a record of 8-6-2 during the regular season to make states for the first time in several years. In the Class L State Tournament, the Indians earned a 1-0 win over Crosby in the first round before taking a 2-0 loss to Hand in a second-round game.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven played its first game with new Head Coach Gary Collins when the squad hosted Cheshire for its season opener last week. The Indians dropped a 3-0 decision to the Rams at North Haven Middle School on Sept. 12.

This year, North Haven is playing in the SCC Quinnipiac Division with Mercy, Guilford, and Foran. The Indians posted a record of 4-10-2 last season.

Field Hockey

The Indians took two defeats in a pair of home games to begin their season.

On Sept. 12, North Haven lost a 3-0 contest to SCC opponent Lyman Hall in its first game of the year. Two days later, the Indians hosted non-conference squad Bethel and lost by a 3-1 final at North Haven High School.

Kim Bouffard returns for her fifth season as the Indians’ head coach. North Haven finished with a record of 2-13-1 in 2018.

Volleyball

North Haven was on the road to face Guilford for its first match of the fall and took a 3-0 loss on Sept. 13.

Brianna Kleckner is back for her fourth campaign as North Haven’s head coach. The Indians are playing in the SCC Hammonasset Division with Cheshire, Hamden, Foran, and West Haven this fall.

In 2018, North Haven went 14-4 in the regular season to qualify for both the SCC Tournament and the Class L Tournament. In SCCs, the Indians earned a 3-0 win over West Haven in the first round and then took a 3-0 loss to Guilford in the quarterfinals. After that, the Indians competed in the Class L State Tournament, where they claimed a 3-1 victory against Hand in a first-round match. North Haven later took a 3-0 defeat to Kennedy in the second round to finish at 16-6 overall.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians came in 19th place when they started their campaign by running at the Haddad Windham Invitational on Sept. 7.

Freshman Tyler Wurm turned in North Haven’s top performance by coming in 58th place with a time of 18:08. Junior Patrick Rourke crossed the finish line with a time of 18:44 to take 74th place. The Indians’ other competitors at the meet were sophomore Mike Rubano (118th, 19:34), junior Nick Howlett (121st, 19:37), senior Aidan Bergin (155th, 20:27), sophomore Aaron Barbiero (166th, 20:47), and junior Tiernan Neville (205th, 21:40).

North Haven posted a regular-season record of 10-4 in 2018. The Indians went on to finish in 14th place at both the SCC Championship and the Class MM State Championship.

Girls’ Cross Country

North Haven began its season by competing at the Haddam Windham Invitational last week. The Indians finished in 20th place at the meet.

Senior Reagan Forbes led the way for North Haven by finishing in 37th place with a time of 22:57. Freshman Payton Orosco finished in 75th place at 24:41. Sophomore Caitlyn McFarland came in 125th place (27:27), sophomore Riley Minns finished in 147th (28:35), and junior Taya Stanley finished in 151st place (29:04).

Last year, North Haven went 6-8 during the regular season, after which the Indians finished 16th at the SCC Championship and 17th at the Class MM State Championship.
