H-K Football Takes 3-0 Loss to Cromwell-Portland in Opener; Girls’ Soccer, Volleyball Begin with Wins

Football

One year after advancing to the Class S state championship game, the Haddam-Killingworth football team kicked off the 2019 season by hosting Cromwell-Portland last week. The Cougars took a 3-0 defeat against the Panthers in a Pequot Conference matchup on Sept. 13.

The Cougars played a strong game on defense and allowed the only points of the contest on a 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. Late in the game, Cromwell-Portland was driving for an insurance score, but H-K’s Kevin Cavrell forced a fumble that was recovered by Alex Riccitelli at the goal line to thwart the drive and give the ball back to H-K. The Cougars had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but H-K’s 25-yard field goal attempt went wide as the Panthers held on for the victory. Dalton Modehn led the H-K offense by gaining 114 yards on 22 carries.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K notched a 6-3 road win over Parish Hill in its first game of the season last week.

Kedarjah Lewis recorded a hat trick by netting three goals in the victory. Yumi Imai, Morgan Madore, and Autumn Walton added one goal apiece for Head Coach Mike Shea’s club. Sophia Torello played goal in the first half for H-K with Kelsey Lonergan stepping into the second net in the second half. Makiya Laurenza and Sophie Gromela defended well in front of the two keepers to help H-K prevail.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars hosted East Hampton in their season opener last week. H-K dropped a 1-0 decision versus the Bellringers on Sept. 14.

Volleyball

The Cougars claimed victory in their opening match of the 2019 season. H-K hosted East Hampton on Sept. 12 and won the matchup by the final tally of 3-1.

Field Hockey

H-K started off its campaign by playing a road game versus Morgan on Sept. 13. The Cougars lost to the Huskies by a 3-0 score at the Indian River Complex in Clinton.

Boys’ Cross Country

Haddam-Killingworth started off its season by traveling to Somers, New York to compete in the Big Red Invitational on Sept. 7. The Cougars competed against more than 30 schools from Connecticut and New York on a challenging 5,000-meter course. H-K, which is the No. 9-ranked team in the state, took first place in the Division 3 race by scoring a total of 66 points.

The Cougars were led by junior Matt Jennings, who finished in second place with a time of 16:28. Jennings was followed across the finish line by senior captain Christian Uzwiak, who finished in 10th place (17:22); along with junior Fisher Harris (15th, 17:38) and junior Sean Rutledge (17th, 17:45). Sophomore Caleb Freeman (22nd, 18:03), junior Julian Spector (23rd, 18:03), and senior captain Griffin Robinson (24th, 18:04) rounded out the pack for the Cougars.

The H-K freshman team came in second place in its race by totaling 88 points. Mason Gorham led H-K by finishing in third place with a time of 9:00 on the 1.5-mile course.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Cougars posted a third-place finish in the Division 3 race when they ran at the Big Red Invitational in Somers, New York on Sept. 7. Junior Meara Bodak finished in 12th place by completing the 3.1-mile course in 21:21 for Haddam-Killingworth. Senior Julia Callis crossed the finish line in 16th place with a time of 21:41. Sophomores Ali Twachtman (22nd, 22:31), Brianna Minervino (28th, 23:07), and Ava DiMatteo (30th, 23:15) were next in line for the Cougars. Senior captain Lauren D’Amico finished 31st (23:16), and sophomore Charlotte Selmer came in 34th place (23:37).

H-K’s freshman team also finished in third place in its race by scoring 67 points. Isabel Beradino ran a time of 11:18 to place seventh for the 1.5-mile course.
