08/12/2019 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League had a recent busy stretch that saw it host two weeks’ worth of play. Following action in Week 17 and Week 18, the Yankees and Royals are tied for first place with just one week left until the playoffs begin.
The Yankees moved into first place in the standings during Week 17 play, when they posted a 4-2 win over the Reds, while Royals lost a 4-2 matchup against the White Sox. In Week 18, the Yankees came away with a 3-3 split versus the Red Sox, and the Royals defeated the Astros by the score of 4.5-1.5 to draw even with the Yankees in the top spot. Both teams have identical records of 69-39.
In Week 17, Mike Zanelli, Sr., of the Rangers stood atop the heap in the A Division by tossing a top score of 154. John Sciacca of the Cubs and Mark Goodale of the Yankees finished in a tie for second place as both throwers recorded a total of 135.
In the B Division, the Yankees’ Todd Nuhn posted the highest score with a 115. Warren Bellows of the Mets claimed second place with a score of 100. Cody Layton of the White Sox totaled a score of 99 and took third place.
The Rangers’ Brian Walsh claimed first place in the C Division with a score of 121. Substitute player Frank Durinick came in second place by throwing a 116, and Ted Dubay of the Cubs racked up a score of 109 to place third.
Then during Week 18 action, the shoes were finding the pins in the A Division. Goodale set a new season-high series score of 165 to finish in first place for the division. Zanelli, Sr., turned in a score of 163 for the second-best series score of the year. Frank Jolly of the Giants recorded a score of 147 to take third place on the week.
In the B Division, Mike Didmizio totaled the highest score with a 124. Layton came in second place with a score of 113, and the Pirates’ Paul Felie finished third with a 98.
Durinick claimed first in the C Division behind a score of 123. Walsh took second place at 104, while Dubay finished with a score of 88 to come in third place.
With only one week left in the regular season, the playoff race remains tight, and the top seed has yet to be determined. Following the Yankees and the Royals in the top two spots, the Reds are in third place with a record of 66.5-41.5, the Pirates are just a game back in fourth at 65.5-42.5, and the Cubs are in fifth place with a mark of 62.5-44.5. The Rangers (60.5-47.5) are in sixth place, and the Astros (60-48) are in seventh place. The White Sox (57-51) are in eighth place, one game ahead of both the Mets and the Tigers, who are both 56-52, for the last playoff spot
The rest of the standings are as follows: Angels (55-53), Dodgers (54-54), Red Sox (53.5-54.5), Braves (52-56), Giants (46.5-61.5), Padres (44-64), Orioles (42-66), Cardinals (41-67), Marlins (39.5-68.5), and Indians (30.5-77.5).
