The North Haven Junior American Legion baseball team picked up three victories while playing six games in Zone 2 action last week. Post 76 earned a 1-0 win over Meriden, lost two out of three in a series against Orange, and then split a doubleheader with Madison. North Haven has a record of 7-12 entering the final week of the regular season.

Close Contest

North Haven started off last week by earning a 1-0 road victory versus Meriden at Legion Field on July 7. Alex Bauman pitched all seven innings for a complete-game shutout to lead Post 76 to the win. Bauman allowed just five hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts in his complete-game performance.

North Haven scored the only run of the day when Chris Hager singled and scored on a base hit by Anthony Acampora in the top of the first inning. Meriden got a runner to third base with outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Bauman struck out the final batter of the game to solidify the win for Post 76. Ty Rooney added two hits for North Haven in the victory.

Three-Game Series

After shutting out Meriden, North Haven went on to lose two of three in series against Orange. North Haven took an 8-5 loss in the first game, lost a 6-2 contest in the second game, and then won the finale by the score of 5-1.

Post 76 dropped an 8-5 decision to Orange in the first game of the series at Bailey Road Field on July 9. The game was tied at 3-3 entering the top of the fourth inning, when Orange scored four runs to take an 7-3 lead. North Haven scored two runs in the sixth to make it 7-5, but Orange came back with a run in the top of the seventh inning and hung on for the win.

Rooney went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, two RBI, and a stolen base for Post 76. Chris Tobin went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Ryan Balzano was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, while Jason Senberg and Acampora both had a single and an RBI.

The next day, North Haven was on the road to face Orange and took a 6-2 defeat at Brinley Field. The game was tied at 1-1 before Orange scored two runs in the fifth inning and then tacked on three more runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Pincince had an RBI single, Acampora and Rooney both walked and scored a run, and Mike Anquillare had a single and a walk.

North Haven bounced back by earning a 5-1 victory versus Orange in the final game of the series at DeMayo Ballfield on July 11. Post 76 was down 1-0 entering the fifth inning, but broke loose to score five runs in the frame and take a 5-1 advantage. The game was called after the top of the sixth inning due to rain. Ryan Cannon threw a complete game for North Haven, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings pitched.

Derek Novicki hit a two-run single to highlight North Haven’s big fifth inning. Novicki went 2-for-2, with a walk, a run scored, and two RBI. Hager had a double with a run scored, Balzano hit a single and scored a run, and Anquillare had a single with a run and a stolen base. Acampora had an RBI and scored a run, while Pincince hit a double and drew a walk for Post 76.

Double Dip

On July 13, North Haven split a home doubleheader with Madison at DeMayo Ballfield. Post 76 claimed a 2-1, nine-inning win in the first game and then lost the second game.

North Haven picked up the walk-off victory in the opener when Novicki drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk that brought home Hager with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Post 76 had trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning, but tied the game when Hager singled in Pincince, who reached on a double.

Bauman pitched another great game by tossing eight innings in which he allowed just one unearned run on six hits and one walk for Post 76. Hager notched the win by pitching a scoreless ninth inning that saw him work out of a bases-loaded jam. Hager also went 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases to help North Haven come away with the victory.
