Branford residents Peter MacPartland and Carl Norbeck recently contributed to the United States Tennis Association’s New England team’s victory over Team Canada in a competition for the Friendship Cup. By winning their respective doubles matches, McPartland and Norbeck helped the United States recapture the Friendship Cup from Canada after Canada had defeated the United States to win it last year.

Norbeck and his doubles partner Mark Gelotte earned a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory over Canada’s Andre Lambert and Fiorangelo Sanzo in the No. 2 doubles match in the 55-and-over-age division. McPartland and doubles partner Joe Bouqin claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win versus Andre Lemaire and Charles Hasthon of Cananda in the No. 2 doubles matchup for the 65-and-over division.

The Friendship Cup is an annual team competition that features the top-ranked senior tennis players from USTA New England and Canada playing against each other in eight age divisions from 45 through 80. The Friendship Cup has been held for the past 50 years and alternates each year between a location north of Montreal and a site in New England. This year, that competition was held in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire from June 22-23.
