Branford Junior Legion Notches First Win; Seniors Edge Out East Haven

Junior Legion

The Branford Junior American Legion baseball team picked up its first win of the summer by defeating Essex in a non-zone game on June 26. Post 83 also took defeats against Zone 2 opponents North Haven, Madison, and West Haven in last week’s action Branford has a record of 0-13 in Zone 2 play and is 1-14 overall this year.

Branford got in the win column by notching a 7-3 victory over Essex last week Post 83 used a four-pitcher combination of Jack Van Gelder, Nick Soliwoda, Kyle Givner, and John Onofrio to come away with the win. Soliwoda earned the victory in relief by allowing one hit and an unearned run, while striking out three. Van Gelder had a hit, a walk, scored two runs, and drove in a pair of runs for Branford. Nick Tranquilli contributed a hit and a walk, while Adam Chasse finished with a hit, a walk, and two runs in the victory.

After beating Essex, Post 83 was swept by North Haven in a three-game weekend series. Branford dropped both ends of a doubleheader on June 29, losing by scores of 15-5 and 8-7, and then took a 13-9 defeat in the final two days later.

In the first game, Dom Bonanno and Ryan Nuzzo each had a hit, a walk, and scored a run for Branford. Onofrio had a hit with a pair of RBI, and Max Libel added a hit.

In the second game of the doubleheader, North Haven clawed out an 8-7 victory in nine innings. Van Gelder pitched six strong innings for Post 83, allowing just one unearned run on three hits to go with eight strikeouts. North Haven came back late in the game to force extra innings and ultimately go on to win it. At the plate, Nuzzo had two hits and three RBI, Dom Viscuso had a hit, walked three times, and scored two runs; and Marc Cirillo finished with a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a pair of runs scored.

On July 1, Branford lost to North Haven by a 13-9 score. Ted Zabawa had three hits and a run, while Van Gelder collected two hits, two walks, three runs, and three RBI. Viscuso finished with a hit and a pair of RBI, Soliwoda had three hits and three RBI, Ben Cooke added a hit and a run scored, and Cirillo had a hit with an RBI.

Branford then took the field versus Madison on July 2 and lost by a 5-1 score. Zabawa finished the game with a pair of hits, Bonanno had a hit with a run scored, and Onofrio added a hit with an RBI.

The next day, Branford lost a 9-3 decision versus non-zone opponent Naugatuck. Zabawa had a hit and an RBI, Van Gelder contributed a hit with a run scored, and Soliwoda had a hit, a run, and an RBI. Onofrio finished the contest with two hits, plus Ryan Anderson had one hit.

Post 83 closed out its week with by taking two losses in a doubleheader against West Haven on July 6. Branford lost the first game by a 3-1 final and then dropped a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

Senior Legion

The Branford Senior American Legion baseball team took a few recent defeats, before getting a win against East Haven to move to 7-8 in Zone 2 play this summer. Post 83 was swept by North Haven in a three-game series, lost two games to Madison, and then defeated East Haven in recent action.

Branford lost both ends of a doubleheader at North Haven on June 29. Post 83 took a 3-1 defeat in the opener and then dropped a 6-3 decision in the nightcap. The next day, Branford lost a 6-5 contest North Haven in the final game of the series.

On July 1, Branford lost to Madison by a 9-0 final in a road game. Post 83 hosted Madison the following day and dropped a 5-2 contest.

Then on July 6, Branford squared off with East Haven on the road and prevailed by the score of 6-5.

Prep Legion

The Branford Prep Legion baseball team lost two recent contests and is now 1-9 on the year. On June 29, Branford took a 5-1 home loss versus Naugatuck. Then on July 3, Pots 83 hosted Meriden and lost by an 11-1 final.
