North Haven Senior Legion Starts Season with Sweep; Juniors Take Two Defeats


Senior American Legion Baseball

The North Haven Senior American Legion baseball team opened up its season by sweeping a three-game series against Zone 2 Western Division opponent New Haven. Post 76 swept a doubleheader by final scores of 12-2 and 9-7 and then claimed a 6-3 victory in the third game of the set to start the year off at 3-0.

North Haven hosted New Haven for a doubleheader at DeMayo Ballfield on June 11. In the first game, Post 76 scored five runs in the first inning and then added four runs in the second to cruise to a 12-2 win in five innings. Ryan Sullivan pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to get the victory for Post 76. JJ Mazzaro and Nate Zalegowski each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Zack Pincince went 2-for-3 with a run scored, Reid Kankel was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI, and Cole Zalegowski went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run, and two RBI for North Haven. Hunter Garthwait went 1-for-2 with double, a walk, a stolen base, two runs, and an RBI; Danny Cannvaciolo scored two runs, drew two walks, and had a stolen base; and Mason Balmer had two walks with two stolen bases, a run, and an RBI. Gianni DiMartino scored two runs and drew a pair of walks, while Dave Christoforo went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the win.

In the second game, North Haven rallied from a seven-run deficit to get a 9-7 win versus New Haven. Post 76 fell behind 7-0 in the first inning, but came back to nine answered runs and emerge victorious. Mazzaro notched the win by working 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Kankel pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the save. Neither Massaro nor Kankel allowed a hit in their relief stints.

Sullivan went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, DiMartino was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and two RBI; and Pincince went 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two runs, and an RBI. Cannavaciolo scored two runs to go with two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base; Christoforo was 1-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI; Garthwait drew three walks, stole two bases, and scored a run; and Owen Silk had two walks with an RBI.

The next day, Post 76 scored a 6-3 road win versus New Haven at West Rock Field. North Haven scored three runs in the first inning and then the two teams traded runs throughout the rest of the game. Nick Rossi earned the win by allowing one run over five innings. Pincince pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save.

Kevin Lucey went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, a run scored, and an RBI for North Haven. Garthwait was 2-for-3 with a run, Sullivan went 1-for-4 with two RBI, DiMartino went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs, and an RBI; and Cole Zalegowski scored two runs to go with a walk and two runs scored in the victory.

Junior American Legion Baseball

The North Haven Junior American Legion baseball team took a pair of defeats against Zone 2 opponent Wallingford in last week’s action. Post 76 has a record of 0-2 in Zone 2 and is 1-4 overall in the early goings of the season.

North Haven lost a 5-4 contest on the road against Wallingford at Pat Wall Field on June 11. North Haven held a 4-3 lead, before Wallingford scored a run in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth to get the win. Chris Harger went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI for Post 76. Mike Anquillare was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI, Owen Pincince went 1-for-4 with a run scored, Anthony Acampora was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Jason Senberg went 1-for-3 with a run.

The next day, North Haven hosted Wallingford and took a 14-3 loss at Bailey Road Field. Jason Mazzaro went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base, Pincince was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI, and Derek Novicki went 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, and a run scored for Post 76.
