Migliorini Reaches State Open Semifinals for North Haven; Sahirul Takes 4th in Triple Jump at the Open

Girls’ Tennis

Senior Julia Migliorini finished her career as a tennis player at North Haven High School by advancing to the semifinals of the singles tournament at the State Open Championship. Migliorini, the No. 4 seed, won four matches at the Open on her way to reaching the semifinal round, where she took a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against top-seeded Alexis Kubas of Ellington at Wesleyan University on June 4.

Migliorini started off the State Open by notching an 8-0 victory against Nhi Nguyen of Sacred Heart in a first-round matchup at Conard High School on June 1. She went on to claim an 8-0 win versus Sophia Islam from Bethel in the second round. Migliorini advanced to the third round and defeated Emma Caldwell from Wilton by a 7-6, 6-3 score in a two-hour match at Wesleyan on June 3. Migliorini was down 4-1 in the first set, but battled back to win it in a tiebreaker. In the second set, Migliorini went up 5-1 and then held off Caldwell’s comeback bid to take the match.

In the quarterfinal round, Migliorini netted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over No. 5 seed Caitlin Sze of South Windsor. The next day, Migliorini faced Kubas in the semifinals and lost a 6-1, 6-3 decision against the top seed in the tournament. Kubas went on to take a 6-3, 6-3 loss versus Alyssa DeMaio from Staples in the championship match. Migliorini finished her senior season with an overall record of 25-1.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven was represented by two athletes when the State Open Championship took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 3. Senior Camille Sahirul took fourth place in the triple jump, while fellow senior Giselle Zumerchik finished 18th in the 300-meter hurdles for the Indians.

One week after winning the triple jump at the Class MM State Championship, Sahirul reached a distance of 36 feet-6 inches to place fourth in the event at the State Open. Sahirul scored five points for North Haven with her performance that put the team in 39th place at the meet. Sahirul had won the triple jump in the Class MM meet by recording a leap of 36 feet-10.5 inches.

Zumerchik finished the 300 hurdles in a time of 48.33 seconds to finish 18th in the event at the Open. Zumerchik had won the 300 hurdles at the SCC West Sectional Championship (47.03), placed second in the SCC Championship (47.16), and then came in second place at the Class MM State Championship (47.16).

On June 8, Sahirul competed in the triple jump at the New England Championship. Sahirul finished in 16th place with a distance of 35-7.75 at the regional meet, which took place at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Junior Luke Maruca competed in the shot put for the Indians at the State Open Championship last week. Maruca finished in 12th place by launching a throw of 45 feet-5.75 inches in the event. Maruca had previously taken third place in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet-8 inches at the Class MM State Championship.

Golf

North Haven participated in the Division II State Championship that took place at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain on June 3. The Indians posted a collective team score of 398 and came in 19th place at the meet.

Senior Alex Kirtland finished in a tie for 16th place by recording a score of 80 for his 18-hole round at the state meet. Fellow senior Ian Crowther posted a total of 99 and finished in 83rd place for North Haven. Sophomore Anthony Rapuano came in 95th place by turning a round of 109. Junior Elliot Rastkhane was next in line by finishing 96th with a score of 110. Senior Shane McDonald shot a score of 114 and finished in 99th place.
