Old Saybrook Track Enjoys a Great Day at States

The Old Saybrook boys’ and girls’ track teams headed to Willowbrook Park in New Britain last week to compete in the Class S State Championship meets. The girls’ track team was coming fresh off the heels of a Shoreline Conference Championship victory, and the boys’ squad had earned third place at the meet. In 2018, both Rams’ squads earned third-place finishes at states, and this year, the girls’ squad came in second place, while the boys’ squad took third.

The Rams’ girls’ team took second place with 73 points to their credit and finished behind first-place Bloomfield’s score of 128.

Old Saybrook saw several top finishes to help bolster their score, including junior Grace Hanratty’s gold-medal performance in 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.38. Her first-place finished earned Old Saybrook 10 points toward its’ 73-point score. Junior Cate Coppes also garnered first place honors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.18 seconds.

Old Saybrook scored 16.5 points among three pole vaulters. Coppes picked up second place in the pole vault after clearing a height of 10 feet-6 inches. Additionally, junior Grace Mclaughlin came in fourth with her vault of 8-6, while sophomore Hannah Sumby was right below her in fifth place at eight feet.

The Rams’ relays also put up some impressive times for 13 points among them.

The quartet of Hanratty, senior Jessica Stratton, senior Tehra Givehand, and sophomore Emily Stratton snagged a silver medal in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:47.82, which was good for eight points. In the 4x400 relay, Hanratty, junior Allison Cody, freshman Anna Brodeur, and Jessica Stratton came in sixth place with a time of 4:20.63 for three points. The 4x100 relay squad Cody, junior Autumn Szucs, Mclaughlin, and sophomore Priscilla Gumkowski scored a seventh-place finish with a time of 53.17 for two points.

Jessica Stratton scored six more points with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter run clocking in at the 5:11.08 mark. In the high jump, senior Rachel Vigorita cleared 4 feet-8 inches and tied for third place to earn five points, while Gumkowski earned a tie at sixth place with a height of 4-8 and earned 2.5 points.

Senior Isabella Donahue took fifth place in the 100 hurdles and notched four points for the Rams.

Freshman Caitlin Wiley turned in a time of 5:34.19 for seventh place in the 1,600, which earned two points. Wiley also scored a point in the 3,200 with an eighth-place finish at a 12:08.94 mark. In the triple jump, Vigorita scored a couple of points with a seventh-place leap of 31-8.75, the senior also came away with a point in the discus with a distance of 83-9 for eighth place.

Other notable finishes for the girls’ squad included, Givehand’s 10th-place finish in the 1,600 (5:42.03), while Julia Sultina came in 12th place (5:42.53). In the 400 meter dash, Anna Brodeur came in 10th place (1:04.48). Freshman Libby Stuart came in 11th place in the 800 (2:31.91). In the triple jump, Sumby’s distance of 31-6 was good for 10th place, and she took 11th place in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet-10.25 inches.

In the 800, Emily Stratton came in 15th place (2:35.19). In the 300 hurdles, junior Autumn Szucs came in 14th place (53.17). In the javelin, Beldina Feratovic came in 19th place (81-6).

The boys’ squad saw a number of top finishes as well to help boost its point total for third place at 53 points.

Junior Luke Hanratty claimed first place in the 800 meter-run with a time of 1:58.21 earning the Rams 10 big points. In the 1,600, Shane Henderson grabbed the gold with a time of 4:28.57, also putting a 10 spot on the board for Saybrook.

In the 300 hurdles, junior Cooper Luciani secured a second-place finish and eight points with his time of 40.73.

The Rams’ boys’ squad also receive quality relay performances including a top finish from their 4x800-meter relay team of sophomore Jacob Schneider, Luciani, Henderson, and Hanratty, who clocked in at 8:08.53. The 4x400 meter relay quartet of Max Thomas, Luciani, Henderson, and Hanratty taking second place with a time of 3:27.37. Additionally, the 4x100 relay group of Thomas, senior Carlos Chacon, senior Devon Moshier, and junior Jonathan Barnes earned sixth place with their time of 45.06, which was good for three points.

Outside of the relay, Barnes took fifth place in the high jump after clearing 5 feet-10 inches for four points.

Chacon took 11th place in the 100 with a time of 11.65. Jack Wiley came in 16th place in the 3,200 with his mark of 10:48.07. In the javelin, Landis Twomey took 16th place with a distance of 123-3.

In the long jump, John Gableman came in 13th place with a distance of 19-8.25, while Colin Schulmeister came in 27th in the same event with a distance of 18-1.25. Schulmeister also competed in the triple jump, and turned in a distance of 36-5.25 for 20th place.
