The Morgan boys’ tennis team sent some of its top players to the Class S State tournaments this past week and saw some modest success, including a trip to the finals of the doubles bracket for the pairing of Chris Nuzzo and Garrett Johnson.
Chris Nuzzo and Garret Johnson earned a first-round bye, and then took a 6-3, 6-0 win versus Michael Basile and Christopher Cabrera in the second round. Nuzzo and Garrett beat Hayden Lombardi and Nicholas Wyskowski by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the third round. In the quarterfinals, the Morgan duo defeated Timmy Donovan and Noah Parilla by a 6-0, 6-2 margin. In the semis, Nuzzo and Johnson won a hard fought 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 win against Corner Wyman and Theodore Wayland. Nuzzo and Johnson moved onto the final round, and lost a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 match against Graham Johnstone and Kyle Remmert of Stongington.
Zach Johnson and Charles Whelan defeated Tyler Brown and Ethan Morton of Granby by a 6-2, 6-1 score. The Morgan pair defeated Dante Polletta and Devon Polletta of Woodland, 6-4, 6-3. Johnson and Whelan ultimately lost in the third round in a 6-4, 6-1 match against Cedrik Cudmore and Ewan McNeil of Cromwell.
Paddy Murray and JP Nye snagged a couple of wins in the doubles bracket, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Owen Andrews and Gabe Taranto of Shepaug Valley in the first round and a 6-3,6-1 win over Cameron Irvine and Alex Lusitani of Cromwell in the second. However in the third round, Murray and Nye lost a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 match against Nicholas Fava and Timothy O’Brien of Old Lyme.
As for the singles bracket, senior Sean Arribas Cockley took a narrow first-round defeat against Levi Franson of Lyman Memorial by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 11-9. Calvin Jackson also lost in the first round taking a 6-0, 6-0 defeat against Ishan Seth of Rocky Hill. Isaac Adler lost his first round contest against Drew Doerwald of Shepaug Valley by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team competes in the Shoreline Conference Tournament final last week, where it lost to North Branford. The Huskies hosted the Thunderbirds at the Indian River Complex and took the 12-7 loss before they headed to the Class S State Tournament. In the first round of states, Morgan dropped a 10-5 road contest against familiar foe Haddam-Killingworth. The Huskis finished the season with an 11-8 overall record.
On May 23, the Huskies and North Branford battled for the Shoreline Conference crown. Each team put three goals into the net in the first quarter, and after a 4-3 second quarter, the Thunderbirds had an 8-7 advantage at the intermission. North Branford outscored Morgan by a 4-1 margin in the third, and tacked on another goal in the fourth to secure the 12-7 victory.
Ryan Caldwell scored a pair of goals, as did Ford Pender, who also notched an assist. Zak Johnson had a pair of helpers in the loss, while Matt Lee, Tim Lichack, and Sean Fitzgerald scored a goal apiece. Matt Luchuk had 11 saves.
On May 29, the Huskies headed to Haddam-Killingworth, where they took a 10-5 loss to the Cougars. Morgan took a 1-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Cougars scored five goals to the Huskies’ one for a 5-2 advantage at halftime. Morgan and H-K each scored a single goal in the third quarter, but the Cougars were able to extend their lead with a 4-2 fourth for the 10-5 win.
Johnson notched a pair of goals, while Caldwell, Pender, and Lichack each scored single goals. Luchuk made 14 saves in net.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Huskies competed in the Class S State Tournament last week and took a win and a loss on the playoff slate. Morgan grabbed a win in the qualifying round of the tournament, but then took a loss in the first round to finish 2019 with an 8-11 overall record.
On May 25, the No. 17 seed Huskies blew out 16th-seeded St. Bernard in a 13-1 win. Three days later, Morgan went up against the top seed of the tourney in New Fairfield and took a 20-6 road defeat.
Baseball
The Morgan baseball team took competed in the Class S State Tournament last week and played a road game against Lyman Memorial. The Huskies lost a narrow 3-2 contest when the Bulldogs knocked in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off win. The Huskies finished the season with a 9-12 overall record.
On May 29, the Huskies headed to Lebanon to face off with the Bulldogs. Lyman Memorial took the early advantage scoring a run in each of the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. Morgan got the score back to even with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning on a double from freshman Garret Garbinski that plated Ryan Egan and Ryan Hromadka. The score would remain knotted at 2-2 until Lyman Memorial walked it off with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.
Egan and Hromadka had a hit and a run scored apiece, while Garbinski had two RBI and a base hit. Mike Menacho grabbed a hit, as did Kyle Burt and Kyle Suraci. Connor Derry threw 6.2 innings and only allowed six hits and two earned runs.
Golf
The Morgan golf team finished up its 2019 regular season late with a couple of wins and a couple of losses last week. The Huskies turned in a final overall record of 8-13 on the season with a 4-6 mark in the Shoreline Conference.
On May 28, Morgan joined East Lyme and Fitch at the Old Lyme Country Club for a three team match. The Huskies shot a total of 187 to beat Fitch’s score of 194, but fell short of East Lyme’s 158. Sophomore Jason Cohen shot the lowest score for the Huskies with 43.
The next day, the Huskies had a foursome that included Fitch, Griswold, and Plainfield at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. Plainfield was disqualified from the match, while Morgan picked up a win against Griswold at 189-207, but lost to Fitch by a 175-189 tally. Cohen was Morgan’s low-man again with 45.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Morgan boys’ track team sent a handful of competitors to take part in the Class S State Championship last week. The Huskies came in 21st place as a squad with five points.
Bryce Thomas scored all of Morgan’s points on the day when he came in sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.57 seconds for three points, and took seventh place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-10 inches for two points. Thomas also came in 16th place in the 200 with a time of 23.73.
Michael Monty earned 11th place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.13.
Paul Rodriguez turned in a time of 43.86 in the 300 hurdles for 12th place. Rodriguez also earned 19th place in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet-0.5 inches. In the triple jump, Rodriguez’s leap of 36-8.5 landed him in 19th place, as well.
In the 400, Chayse Lofgren got 17th place with a time of 54.57. The 4x100 relay team of Alex Gallardo, Ryan Gode, Fabio Silveira, and Warner came in 20th with a time of 49.33. The 4x800 relay squad of Hayden Saranich, Aiden Maurais, Justin Mucha, and Lofgren turned in a time of 9:05.04 to take 16th place. Ryan Warner had a time of 12.71 seconds in the 100 and took 45th place.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Several Huskies’ athletes competed in the Class M State Championship last week, which was held at Willowbrook park on May 29. Morgan tallies a total of five points and earned 27th place overall.
Alyssa LeMay scored the Huskies five points with a fourth-place finish in the long jump turning in a distance of 17 feet-0.25 inches. Additionally, LeMay took 10th place in the 100 with a time of 13.14 seconds. LeMay also took 16th place in the 200 with a time of 27.89.
Kayla Pollard turned in a time of 28.04 second in the 200 for 20th place. Pollard took 25th in the 400 with a time of 1:04.64.
Sidney Church came in 25th place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.41. in the 300 hurdles, Church took 27th place with a time of 52.80. Charlotte Davenport came in 27th place in the triple jump with a leap of 30-2.
In the 4x800, Isabelle Ranaudo, Annalyse Olcott, Ella Franzoni, and Maura Kelly took 16th place with a time of 11:05.79. The 4x400 relay team of Church, Ranaudo, Kelly, and Pollard came in 18th place with a time of 4:36.82
