Comment Advances to Class S Quarterfinals for Westbrook; Donlan Places 4th in Shot Put at State Meet

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team sent a handful of players to compete in the Class S State Tournaments last week.

Nathan Comment took a first round victory defeating Kyle Keefe of St. Bernard in a forfeit. In the second round, Comment earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Noah Kroniger of Granby Memorial. Comment grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win against Ishan Sheth of Rocky Hill in the third round. Ultimately, Comment lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision in the quarterfinal versus Jacob Stiger of Stonington.

Jesse McGannon lost his first-round match against Joe Wilson of Immaculate, and Cooper Whitehouse also took a first round defeat with a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Aneesh Sridhar of Classical Magnet.

In the doubles bracket, Joseph Caslin and Mason Malchiodi picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Harsh Patel and Krish Kaneria of Windsor Locks in the first round, but dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match against Nikhileshwar Anaparthi and Ayush Patel of Rocky Hill in the second round.

The duo of Jack Lyman and Lukas Francis dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 match against Zachary Thompson and James Wolf of Nonnewaug in the first round. Finn McGannon and Ben Schrek lost their first-round matchup against Michael Basile and Christopher Cabrera of Immaculate by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team competed in the Class S State Tournament last week. The Knights entered the draw as the No. 12 seed in the bracket and faced off against Shepaug Valley in the first round on May 25. Westbrook dropped its road contest against Shepaug by a score of 5-2 to finish the year with an overall record of 15-6.

Westbrook also saw No. 1 singles player Sara Farnoli compete at the State Open tournament on June 1

Farnoli dropped her first round match with Gabby Gatto of St. Joseph by a score of 8-2. The duo of Savannah Marshall and Alexandra Koplas also competed at the open and took an 8-5 loss in the first round against Lacey Heim and Alexys Suojanen of Windsor Locks in the first round.

Baseball

The Knights lost their first round matchup against the Shoreline Conference champions, Portland as part of the first round of the Class S State Tournament last week. On May 29, the Knights entered the tourney draw as the No. 30 seed and faced off at the 5th-seeded Highlanders. Westbrook lost a 5-0 contest against Portland, whose pitching was too much to handle for the Knights.

Portland scored two runs in the bottom of the first, another in the third, and tacked on two more in the sixth. Westbrook’s three hits came from David McCain, Tavish Ernst, and Zach True, who all had one apiece.

The Knights finished the season with a 9-12 overall record.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook sent several athletes to try their hand at the Class S State Championship meet at Willowbrook Park in New Britain on May 30. The Knights took 23rd place overall with six points to their credit as a squad.

Kelly Donlan grabbed fourth place in the shot put with a distance of 32 feet-11 inches. Donlan also took 16th place in the discus with a throw of 72 feet-6 inches, and 21st in the javelin with a distance of 74 feet.

Elizabeth Gallagher took part in 400-meter dash and earned an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:03.83. In the 100, Gallagher came in 28th place with a time of 13.24, and in the 200, Gallagher notched a 23rd place finish with a time of 28.86.

Avery Bauman earned 11th place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:42.51. Megan Graves’s leap of 30 feet earned her 15th place in the triple jump.

The 4x800 relay team of Marguerite Bartlett, Cierra Brundage, Brook Neri, and Katherine Dahl came in 18th place with a time of 11:44.62.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook sent Luca Troop to represent the Knights at the Class S State Championship meet on May 30. Troop took 28th place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.56 seconds.
