Three H-K Teams See Wins in States Before Getting Eliminated

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball won its first two games in the Class M State Tournament, before taking a defeat versus Wolcott in the quarterfinal round last week. The Cougars finished their campaign with an overall record of 18-6.

No. 9 seed H-K defeated No. 24 Stonington by a 3-1 score behind a no-hitter from Jon Civiello in the first round of the Class M draw on May 29. Civiello only allowed one unearned run in the fifth inning on his way to tossing a no-no. He also helped his cause by driving home a pair of runs at the plate. Luke DiMauro doubled and scored two runs for the Cougars in the victory.

The next day, H-K posted a 3-2 win at No. 8 seed East Catholic in a second-round contest. Sam Erskine had two hits and two RBI, while Alec Erskine scored two runs and pitched a perfect fifth inning to get the win. Alden Halfinger earned the save on the mound for H-K.

On June 1, the Cougars took an 8-0 loss at top-seeded Wolcott in the Class M quarterfinals.

Softball

The Cougars began Class M State Tournament play with a lopsided victory and then took a loss in a second-round contest. H-K notched a mark of 14-9 on the season.

No. 19 seed H-K routed No. 14 Wilcox Tech by a 16-0 final in a first-round road game on May 29. Faith Mauri led the Cougars’ offense with two home runs and a triple for six RBI. Shannon Nelson and Ella McGlynn both had three hits and two RBI to aid the attack. Brooke LaTouche was the winning pitcher by throwing five innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts. Faith Torello completed the shutout with two innings of relief work.

The next day, the Cougars were eliminated from the tournament when they dropped an 8-0 decision at No. 3 seed Waterford in the second round.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K prevailed in its Class M State Tournament opener, before losing its quarterfinal contest to finish at 12-7 overall this year.

One week after losing to Morgan in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals, the 7th-seeded Cougars gained a measure of revenge by netting 10-5 win over the 10th-seeded Huskies in the first round of states on May 29. Then on June 1, H-K hosted No. 15 seed East Catholic for a quarterfinal game and lost by the final score of 13-5.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Matt Jennings took the title in the 1,600 to help H-K place fifth at the Class M State Championship at Willow Brook Park on May 29. H-K scored 47.75 points at the meet.

Jennings ran a time of 4:22.59 to win the 1,600 over runner-up Killian McNamee of Tolland (4:24.59). He also finished seventh in the 3,200 with a time of 9:48.89 and ran with Christian Uzwiak, Seth Freeman, and Kyle Criscuolo on the Cougars’ 4x800 relay that finished third at 8:18.60.

Seth Regan took third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 22.63 seconds for H-K. Tyler Knapp came in third place for the pole vault by clearing 12 feet-6 inches, while Owen Howes tied for eighth at 10-6. Luke Sodergren finished fifth for the 110 high hurdles (15.80) and was eighth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.48). Eamon Sweeney tied for sixth in the high jump (5-8), Dalton Modehn finished seventh for the triple jump (40-11.25), and Colton Lavoie was seventh for the discus (128-5) and eighth in the shot put (43-4).

H-K’s 4x100 relay of Dmytri Mallon, Regan, Modehn, and Knapp finished sixth (45.12), while the 4x400 of Sodergren, Fisher Harris, Criscuolo, and Mallon placed seventh (3:33.04).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

H-K finished in eighth place with 26 points scored at last week’s Class M State Championship.

The Cougars’ 4x800 relay of Hailey Cassidy, Julia Callis, Brianna Minervino, and Emma Anziano earned runner-up honors by timing in at 9:44.47. Anziano also finished fourth for the 1,600 (5:07.76) and came in seventh in the 800 (2:22.19).

Autumn Coady finished sixth in both the 100 hurdles (16.69) and the 300 hurdles (48.92). Amanda Minervino finished sixth (102-0) for the javelin with Reilly Jenkins placing eighth (99-11). H-K’s 4x400 relay of Coady, Elena Boyington, Callis, and Ashley Duncanson finished eighth with a time of 4:19.37.
