Ragaini Wins the Javelin at Class MM Championship; Three Easties’ Tennis Players Compete in Postseason

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Junior Bella Ragaini claimed victory in the javelin to lead the East Haven girls’ outdoor track team at the Class MM State Championship last week. The Yellowjackets finished in 13th place by scoring 21 points at the meet, which started at Middletown High School on May 29 and was completed at Willow Brook Park the following day due to rain.

Ragaini’s toss of 103 feet-8 inches was more than a foot greater than that of Killingly’s Grace Nichols, who threw 102 feet to take second place. Ragaini scored 10 points for the Easties with her victory.

Sophomore Kisha Francois scored the other 11 points for East Haven by finishing second in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. In the 100, Francois sprinted to a time of 12.66 seconds to place second in the final after taking second in the preliminaries at 12.62. In the 200, Francois finished with a time of 26.85 seconds to come in second place.

Francois also competed in the long jump, where she took 11th place with a leap of 16-6.5. Freshman Morgan D’Auria took 11th place in the triple jump at 33-1.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven competed at last week’s Class MM State Championship and scored five points to finish in 27th place in the meet.

Senior Evan Damian scored four points for the Yellowjackets by taking fifth place in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.69 seconds. Damian improved upon his time from the preliminary heat, where he finished seventh in 16.16 to qualify for the final.

The Yellowjackets’ other point came via their 4x100 meter relay. East Haven’s team of junior Nathan Santos, senior Steve Johnson, Damian, and sophomore Radames Figueroa finished in eighth place by recording a time of 45.75 seconds.

Other competitors for East Haven at states included Johnson in the long jump (11th, 19-3.5), Damian in the triple jump (14th, 36-5.5), junior Ian Loehman in the 110 hurdles (16th, 17.45), Figueroa in the 110 hurdles (19th, 17.87) and long jump (26th, 18-0.75), and Santos in the long jump (24th, 18-0.75).

Baseball

East Haven took a 7-2 loss at Guilford in the first round of the Class L State Tournament last week. The Yellowjackets, who were the No. 20 seed, finished their campaign with an overall record of 11-11 after losing to No. 13 seed Guilford on May 29.

The Easties got on the board when senior Robert Garcia roped a two-run single down the first-base line in the second inning for a 2-0 advantage. Senior captain Nate Furino got the start on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings until Guilford took advantage of some Yellowjackets’ errors to plate seven runs in the fifth on its way to a 7-2 win.

Boys’ Tennis

Senior captain Joe Brown and sophomore Matt DiVito competed on behalf of East Haven at last week’s Class M State Championship in Bristol on May 24 and 25. The duo was the No. 12 seed in the doubles tournament and advanced to the second round by winning its first-round contest.

Brown and DiVito claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Evan Haskins and Joe Zhou of Woodstock Academy in first-round action at state meet. In the second round, they took a 6-3, 6-1 defeat versus Alexander Fishbein and Tyler Shoban of Wolcott 6-3, 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

Senior Jenna Pane represented the Yellowjackets when she competed at the State Open Championship last week. Pane played in the singles tournament and took an 8-3 loss against 16th-seeded Rachel Dingley of RHAM in a first-round matchup at Conard High School on June 1.
