Marriott Wins Three Events, Sahirul Takes Triple Jump as North Haven Places 4th in States

Senior Erica Marriott took first place in three events, while fellow senior Camille Sahirul also won an event, to help the North Haven girls’ outdoor track team finish in fourth place at the Class MM State Championship last week. Marriott claimed first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the long jump for the Indians, who also saw Sahirul post a first-place performance in the triple jump. As a team, North Haven scored 53 points to come in fourth at the Class MM meet, which started at Middletown High School on May 29 and was completed at Willow Brook Park the following day due to rain.

Marriott reached a distance of 17 feet-11.5 inches to win the long jump for the fourth season in a row at states. Marriott’s distance beat out runner-up Nyimah Ambrose of Hillhouse, who finished at 17-10. Marriott also defeated Ambrose to defend her Class MM title in the 200. Marriott won the event for the second-straight year by running a time of 25.54 seconds, edging out Ambrose’s mark of 25.91. In the 100, Marriott ran the best time of 12.55 in the preliminaries and then claimed first place overall by finishing with a 12.45 seconds in the finals, defeating runner-up Kisha Francois of East Haven (12.66) for the top spot.

Marriott scored 10 points for North Haven with her trio of first-place finishes. Marriott had previously placed first in the 100 (12.53) and the 200 (25.38) at the SCC West Sectional Championship, after which she won the 100 and 200 with times of 12.82 and 25.00 seconds, respectively, at the SCC Championship.

Sahirul took first place in the triple jump by hitting a distance of 36 feet-10.5 inches to score 10 points for North Haven. Aliya Cameron of Sacred Heart finished second in the event at 36-5. Sahirul also scored two points by taking seventh place in the long jump with a leap of 16-10.5. Fellow senior Sarina Sandwell reached a distance of 34-11.75 in the triple jump to take sixth place and score three points.

Senior Giselle Zumerchik posted a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles by finishing with a time of 47.16 seconds. Zumerchik, who scored eight points with that performance, also finished 14th in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles at 17.27. Zumerchik had won the 300 hurdles at the West Sectional Championship (47.03) and finished in second place at the SCC Championship (47.16).

Freshman Ada Forbes finished ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.00 at states. Freshman Brooke Waldron took 12th place in the 300 hurdles with a 52.72.

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of Zumerchik, Sandwell, sophomore Sofia Fappiano, and Forbes came in 11th place behind a time of 4:20.93. The 4x100 relay of Forbes, senior Jackie Howlett, junior Reagan Forbes, and sophomore Taya Stanley recorded a mark of 11:08.41 and finished in 18th place.

Junior Samantha Helwig finished 17th in the javelin with a throw of 82-9, while fellow junior Giuliana Ciarleglio took 18th place at 79-6. Freshman Emily Cocco placed 23rd in the shot put with a toss of 28-4. Junior Sammy Curcio placed 33rd for the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.72 seconds.
