Guilford’s Lacrosse Squads Advance to State Semis; Boys’ Tennis Ties for 5th in Class L Championship

Girls’ Lacrosse

One week after claiming its first outright SCC Tournament title, the Guilford girls’ lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament by winning its first two games in the draw last week.

The top-seeded Indians started off states by eliminating rival and No. 17 seed Hand with a 13-10 victory in a first-round matchup on May 28. Two days later, Guilford hosted No. 8 seed Barlow in the quarterfinals and recorded a 12-11 overtime victory when Maddie Epke netted the game-winning goal during the instant-victory OT period.

The Indians, who are now 18-2 overall, will face No. 13 seed St. Joseph in the Class M semifinals at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 3 at Cheshire High School. The winner moves on to the final to play the winner of No. 3 East Lyme and No. 10 Masuk at Law High School on Saturday, June 8.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians kicked off the Class M State Tournament by notching a pair of victories to move on to the semifinal round.

No. 4 seed Guilford dispatched No. 13 Foran by an 18-4 score in the first round on May 30. Hosting No. 12 North Haven in the quarterfinals, Guilford triumphed by an 11-3 final to advance to the semis.

Guilford, which has a record of 16-4, will play No. 1 seed New Fairfield (17-1) in the Class M semifinals at Fairfield University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. With a win, the Indians would take on the winner of No. 3 Weston and No. 10 Notre Dame-West Haven in the championship game at McMahon High School on Saturday, June 8.

Baseball

The Indians won their Class L State Tournament opener and then took a defeat in a second-round game last week.

No. 13 seed Guilford posted a 7-2 victory against No. 20 East Haven in the first round of states on May 29. The next day, the Indians took an 8-5 loss at No. 4 seed Hand in the second round. Guilford finished the year with an overall record of 13-10 after starting off the season with a mark of 1-5.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians finished tied for fifth place by scoring 11 points at the Class L State Championship that took place in Farmington last week.

Gianni Esposito was seeded 4th in the singles draw and reached the quarterfinals by defeating Wesley Roser of RHAM (6-0, 6-0), Nicholas Derby from Darien (0-6, 6-2, 12-10), and No. 14 seed Jerry Zhang from Farmington (6-3, 7-5). In the quarterfinals, Esposito took a 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 10-4 loss against New Canaan’s Jason Lee.

Also in singles, No. 7 seed Alex Kagan prevailed 6-0, 6-0 over Naugatuck’s Brian Andrade and then lost to Sebastien Lowy of Hand by the score of 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the second round. Walker Mulligan posted a 6-0 6-0 shutout against Kyle Tran of Bristol Eastern in the first round, before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 13 Dylan Koziol in the second round. Ethan DeAngelo won his opening-round match over Brandon Greger of Bristol Eastern by an 8-1 score. In the first round, he took a 6-1, 6-0 loss against No. 9 seed Ryan Patrick from Darien.

In the doubles tournament, Guilford’s 12th-seeded team of Noah Horton and Erik Mastalerz won a 7-5, 6-1 decision over South Windsor’s Jonathan Huot and Jason Rickenbacher and then claimed a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory against Kumar Darsh and Rohit Limaye of Farmington. In the third round, they lost a 6-1, 6-3 contest against the 5th-seeded team of Jack McCarthy and Alessandro Sulpiz from New Canaan.

Nicholas Cimino and Dominic Dadak defeated Jake Cardines and Grant Garcia of Newington by a 6-2, 6-3 score and then took a 6-2, 6-4 loss versus the 8th-seeded team of Tyler Cramer and Ian Wise from Darien in the second round. The team of Nicholas Antony and Ethan Corpuel lost to John Mezzo and Jared Montini of Naugatuck by the score of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in their first-round match.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Guilford scored 10 points and finished in 16th place at the Class L State Championship at Middletown High School on May 30.

Meredith Bloss finished third in the 3,200-meter run by running a time of 11:20.93 for the Indians. Zoe McClure came in fifth for the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet-4 inches.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians finished in 22nd place with 7.5 points scored at last week’s Class MM State Championship. The meet began at Middletown High School on May 29, but was finished at Willow Brook Park the next day due to rain.

Connor Rose came in fifth place for the discus with a toss of 120 feet-2 inches for Guilford. The Indians’ 4x800 relay of McKendry Eschinger, Thomas Gregory, Griffin Hughes, and Will Dinauer placed sixth in a time of 8:26.31. Guilford’s 4x400 relay of Eschinger, Cameron Hubbard, Gregory, and Joe Walters tied for eighth place with a time of 3:33.62.
