The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team competed in its fourth SCC Tournament final since 2013 last week. The Indians took a 13-7 loss against top-seeded Fairfield Prep in the championship game at West Haven High School on May 25.

Guilford, which earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament after going 13-3 during the regular season, had advanced to the final by earning a 17-7 home win over No. 3 Xavier in the semis on May 21. In the title game, Guilford was only down by two entering the third quarter, but Prep scored three-straight goals to end the period and went on to win its fourth SCC title in a row.

“We played against a very good team in Fairfield Prep and, whenever you do that, you have to make few mistakes and play a near perfect game,” Head Coach Brian White said. “They just have so much talent on that team, and they just started to win a lot of faceoffs.”

The Indians, who are now 14-4 overall, were outshot 21-15 by Prep and received eight saves in net from junior Devlin Ahlefeld. Senior captain John DeLucia scored two goals for Guilford, while junior captain Jack Dacey had four goals in the game. DeLucia was also honored as the SCC co-Player of the Year and made the All-SCC First Team with Jack Dacey and senior Miles Gabriel. Senior Tyler Filley and junior Owen Nizolek earned All-SCC Second Team honors for the Indians this year.

Fairfield Prep (15-3) struck first by scoring a goal with 11:11 remaining in the opening quarter, but DeLucia responded with a goal to tie the game less than a minute later. The Jesuits followed with a pair of goals, before Dacey scored to make it 3-2. Prep finished the frame with four-straight goals to take a 7-2 advantage.

Junior James Wrynn netted a goal for the Indians to cut it to 7-3 with 6:15 to play until halftime. After Prep went up 8-3, DeLucia and Dacey both scored a goal to make it 8-5 at the break. Dacey’s score came with just two seconds left in the half.

The Indians took their momentum into the second half and trimmed the deficit to 8-6 when Dacey rifled one into the back of the net with 9:36 remaining in the third quarter. However, Prep came back by scoring three goals in a row to bring an 11-5 advantage into the final period. Dacey scored Guilford’s final goal of the game during the fourth quarter.

“We are a good team offensively and, with guys like John and Jack, we can definitely score in bunches,” Coach White said. “We lost some faceoffs, missed some ground balls, and we were just trying to play catchup.”
