Bloss Wins the 1,600 and 3,200 at SCCs; Baseball, Boys’ Tennis Lose in Conference Tourney

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Meredith Bloss took first place in the 1,600 and the 3,200 to lead to Guilford girls’ outdoor track team at the SCC Championship on May 20. The Indians scored 41 points and placed eighth as a squad at Lyman Hall High School on May 20.

In the 1,600, Bloss ran a time of 5 minutes and 27.94 seconds to beat out Hamden’s Ella Bradford (5:29.66) for the title. In the 3,200, Bloss crossed the finish line in 11:52.26 to outpace Elizabeth Brown of Sheehan (12:05.30).for the crown.

Sofia Migani took third place in the high jump by clearing 4 feet-10 inches for Guilford. Gianna Siciliano finished third for the 3,200 (12:09.55), Clara Wiesler followed in fourth (12:10.45), Julia Antony took sixth (12:17.95), and Yanli Muhs placed eighth (12:37.87).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Connor Rose finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 123 feet and 1 inch for the Indians at the SCC Championship. Rose’s performance scored five points for Guilford that put the team in 17th place at the meet.

Baseball

The Indians lost to Hand in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament quarterfinals and will be competing in the Class L State Tournament this week.

No. 6 Guilford faced No. 3 Hand in the SCC quarters and took a 4-3 loss in 11 innings on May 20. Mike Stebbins had three hits for the Indians, who are 12-9 on the season.

Boys’ Tennis

Guilford won its opening contest in the SCC Tournament, before taking a loss in the semifinal round.

The 4th-seeded Indians dispatched No. 5 Xavier by a 5-1 score in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals on May 20. The next day, the Indians took a 6-1 defeat against No. 1 seed Hand in the semifinals at Yale University. Then on May 22, Guilford netted a 4-3 win over West Haven in its regular-season finale.

Guilford, which is 16-5 overall, is playing in the Class L State Championship this week.

Golf

The Indians finished their regular season with a mark of 15-3 after gaining a split of their last two matches.

Guilford defeated East Haven by the final score of 161-227 on May 20. The Indians then took a 174-190 loss against Hamden on May 21. Guilford is competing in the SCC Championship at Race Brook Country Club on Tuesday, May 28 at 9 a.m.

Crew

Guilford finished the 2019 season strong by turning in two solid showings at postseason meets.

On May 19, the Indians competed at the Connecticut Public School Rowing Association State Championships. The girls’ team produced a solid performance by earning two grand final appearances and snagging a silver medal. The novice boat won its heat to advance to the final, where it came in second place with a time of 5:52.40. The first varsity boat placed third in its heat, advancing to grand finals and then placing fifth with a time of 5:24.60. The second varsity boat raced in the final and finished fifth with a 5:40.8. The third varsity boat performed well by finishing sixth at 6:46.20. Guilford’s boat was comprised of novice athletes competing against varsity crews.

The boys’ team also performed well at the State Championship. In the petit finals, the first varsity boat claimed first place with a time of 4:52.30. The second varsity boat placed fifth in its final by recording a time of 5:07.50. The novice boat placed second in the heat to qualify for the final, where it finished fourth in a time of 5:10.90. The first varsity four posted a time of 6:08.30.

On May 25, the Indians’ first and second girls’ varsity boats participated in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championships, which are an invitational regatta for public and private schools. In its first appearance at the NEIRA meet, the first girls’ varsity boat finished with a mark 5:48.42. The second girls’ varsity boat, returning to the meet after competing in 2018, finished its race in 6:00.90.
