Yellowjackets Take 2-1 Loss to Amity in SCC Quarters; Tennis Teams Finish Regular Season Strong

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team took a loss against Amity in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament last week. The Easties have an overall record of 11-10 as they get ready to compete in this week’s Class L State Tournament.

No. 7 seed East Haven dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 2 Amity in the SCC quarterfinals on May 20. Senior captain Nate Furino pitched a solid game while taking a hard-luck loss for East Haven. Junior Jake Marquardt hit a solo homer to account for the Yellowjackets’ one run in the game.

Softball

The Yellowjackets will open play in the Class L State Tournament this week. East Haven is coming off a regular season that saw the squad post an overall record of 11-9.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets won their final match of the regular season last week. East Haven’s doubles pairing of senior captain Joe Brown and sophomore Matt DiVito will be competing at the Class M State Championship this week.

East Haven edged out Platt Tech by a 4-3 score in its regular-season finale on May 21, finishing the year at 4-16. Freshman Matt Gaudioso rallied for a 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 12-7 victory at No. 1 singles for East Haven. DiVito notched a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles; and sophomore Mateusz Wiszniewski earned a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 4 singles. In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of senior captain Dan Murtagh and junior Fabricio Bugatti prevailed 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 7-6 (12-8) to clinch the victory for the Easties.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven closed out its regular season with a pair of recent victories. The Yellowjackets finished with a record of 6-13 by earning wins versus Wilcox Tech and Platt Tech last week. East Haven will send senior captain Jenna Pane to the State Open Championship after she finished the regular season with a record of 15-3 at No. 1 singles.

On May 20, East Haven hosted Senior Night and celebrated the occasion by earning a 5-2 win against Wilcox Tech. Pane notched an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 singles; junior Jade Roberts won an 8-2 decision at No. 2 singles; and senior captain Mikayla Raffone posted an 8-4 victory at No. 3 singles. In doubles action, juniors Kayla Vernon and Riya Patel claimed an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 pairing of junior Emma Luden and freshman Linnette Gonzalez prevailed by an 8-6 score.

East Haven went on the road and defeated Platt Tech 4-3 in its regular-season finale on May 22. Pane claimed an 8-0 at No. 1 singles; Raffone earned an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles; and Gonzalez netted an 8-0 victory at No. 4 singles. The No. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Siya Patel and Doreen Alberino rallied for a 9-8 (8-6) victory to secure the win for East Haven.

Golf

East Haven completed its regular season by winning one of its last three matches for an overall record of 11-9-1. The Yellowjackets sandwiched a home win versus North Branford around road losses to Guilford and North Haven last week.

East Haven was on the road to play Guilford at Madison Country Club and lost by a 161-227 final on May 20. Junior Logan Hamilton led East Haven with a round of 49. Freshman Norah Rome shot a 54, freshman Nick Sorrentino scored a 57, and sophomore Andrew Zito finished with a 67.

The next day, East Haven posted a 201-204 victory versus North Branford in its last home match of the season at Alling Memorial Golf Club. Zito and Sorrentino earned co-medalist honors as both golfers finished with low rounds of 49. Hamilton shot a 51, and Rome totaled a 52 for the Yellowjackets.

On May 22, East Haven took a 164-195 defeat to North Haven at Tradition Golf Club. Zito and junior Alexis Pendziwater both shot a 47, while Rome finished with a 50 and Sorrentino shot a 51.
