Westbrook Baseball Makes States with Two Victories; Sara Farnoli Takes Shoreline Title

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team closed out their regular season with a pair of wins and qualified for a spot in the Class S State Tournament. The Knights improved their overall record to 9-11 with the victories.

On May 20, Westbrook scored an 11-1 blowout win at East Hampton make its way to states. After two innings, the score was knotted at 1-1, and Westbrook doubled that lead in the third inning. Then in the top of the fourth, the Knights put a crooked number on the board with four runs and never looked back.

Connor Cruz supplied two hits, two runs, and two RBI, while Kyle Robison went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Cameron Marshall had two hits, two RBI and a run, while Quinn Ernst notched a hit and two RBI. Zach True had a hit and a run, and Tavish Ernst provided a hit, two walks, and two runs.

Cruz earned the win on the mound pitching six innings with eight strikeouts.

The next day, the Knights earned a 7-5 road victory against East Windsor with some late scoring. Westbrook took an early lead with two runs in the first, and East Windsor got a run back in the third to make it 2-1. The Knights got another pair in the top of the fourth, and tacked another run on in the fifth for a 5-1 edge. In the bottom of the fifth, East Windors tied the game scoring four runs to make it 5-5. Then in the top of the seventh, Westbrook put up two runs to take the lead for good.

Robison pitched six innings of work for the Knights, and got the win, while Marshall locked it down in the seventh for the save.

David McCain supplied two hits, two runs, and two RBI. David McCain had two hits, two runs, and drove in a run. Robison notched a pair of RBI with a hit and a walk, while Ernst knocked a kit and drove in two. Jack Farrelput up a hit, a run, and an RBI, and Dan Perreault had a hit and a run. True had a base hit.

Softball

Westbrook closed out the season with a pair of lopsided wins. The victories improved the Knights’ record to 4-16 to close out the 2019 campaign.

On May 20, Westbrook scored a 37-3 home win over the Academy of the Holy Family. The next day, the Knights headed to Whitney Tech where they earned another victory with a 19-9 drubbing.

Girls’ Tennis

The Knights sent competitors to the Shoreline Conference Girls’ Tennis Championships last week. Sara Farnoli took the No. 1-2 singles title with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win over North Branford’s Sofia Cavalier. Julia Farnoli came in second place in the No. 3-4 singles bracket after losing to Valley Regional’s Jessica Weinstein by a score of 7-5, 6-3.

The Farnoli sisters earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors for making their way to the final round of their respective brackets.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship meet at Coginchaug High School on May 22. Westbrook earned a seventh-place tie with North Branford scoring 33 points at the meet.

Avery Bauman scored a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.34.

Senior Kelly Donlan had the best showing of the day for the Knights with a first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 33 feet-9.25 inches. Donlan also earned second place in the discus with a throw of 80-9, and the senior came in fifth in the javelin at 92-2.

4x800-meter relay team of Marguerite Bartlett, Avery Bauman, Katherine Dahl, and Brooke Neri came in sixth place with a time of 10:54.66. Elizabeth Gallagher took eight place in the 100 with a time of 13.71.
