Old Saybrook Boys’ Track Takes 3rd at Shorelines; Girls’ Lacrosse Reaches Conference Final

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Old Saybrook boys’ outdoor track team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet held at Coginchaug last week. The Rams came away with a third place finish as a team with 116 points to their credit on the day.

Old Saybrook was bolstered by a handful of top finishes from several of its athletes. Shane Henderson grabbed the gold in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:28.69, which outpaced Haddam-Killingworth’s Matt Jennings’s mark of 4:29.56. Henderson also had a first-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 10:02.7, which was a full four seconds ahead of Jennings’s time of 10:06.74 for H-K.

Luke Hanratty claimed first place in the 400 with a time of 51.79, narrowly edging Dmytri Mallon of H-K and his time of 51.79. Hanratty secured second place in the 800 with a time of 2:04.96, which was just four-tenths of a second slower than the first-place time of East Hampton’s Jacob Ireland.

Jon Barnes grabbed the gold in the long jump with a leap of 5 feet-10 inches, which was two inches further than second-place Eamon Sweeney of H-K.

Old Saybrook’s relay teams did especially well, finishing in the top-three in their races.

The Rams saw a victory from its 4x800 relay team of Hanratty, Henderson, Cooper Luciani, and Jacob Schneider who took first place with a time of 5:12.66 to outpace Haddam-Killingworth’s mark of 8:28.01.

The 4x400 relay team of Calos Chacon, Luciani, Devon Moshier, and Max Thomas claimed second place with a mark of 3:35.08, a little over three seconds off H-K’s time of 3:32.45. The 4x100 relay squad of Chacon, Moshier, Nick Salemi, and Thomas earned third place with a time of 44.59 seconds.

Outside of his work with the relays, Luciani also added a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.87. Cody DeAngelo scored third place in the pole vault after clearing a height of 12-6. Barnes claimed fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-5 inches.

Chacon earned some points outside of relays for Old Saybrook with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.63 seconds. Relay-mate Thomas finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 23.72.

Landis Twomey brought home a bronze in the javelin with a throw of 154 feet-11 inches. Additionally, Twomey placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 39-7, and he took sixth place in the discus with a distance of 106-4.

Colin Schulmeister nabbed sixth place in the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet-11.5 inches.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team played a playoff contest as part of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. Old Saybrook had earned the No. 2 seed in the draw and played a home game against the No. 3 seed Old Lyme in the semifinal on May 21. Old Saybrook hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats by a final score of 14-10, and the Rams moved their overall record to 14-3.

With the victory, Old Saybrook earned a chance the defending Shoreline Conference champions in top-seeded North Branford at the Indian River Complex at on Thursday, May 23 at the Indian River Complex (after press time).

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook had just one contest against Ledyard-Griswold last week. The Rams lost the matchup and finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 2-18. On May 20, Old Saybrook took a 16-5 road loss at Ledyard Griswold.

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team kicked off its postseason with a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal game against Coginchaug last week. The No. 5 seed Rams lost an 11-9 road contest against the 4th-seeded Blue Devils and took an early exit out of the tourney. With the defeat, Old Saybrook’s overall record shifted to 12-9 on the year.

Old Saybrook opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning, but Coginchaug tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning. The Rams scored another run in the top of the third, and then, in the bottom of the frame, Coginchaug took a 4-3 lead. Old Saybrook tied it 4-4 in the fourth, but the Blue Devils put five runs on the board in the next half-inning for a 10-5 advantage. Old Saybrook narrowed the edge to 10-8 after scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Coginchaug got an insurance run to make it 11-8 in the sixth, and the Rams could only manage one more run with their last licks for the 11-9 final.

Davis Brown provided two hits and two runs with a walk, while Patrick Kelley went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Luke Duffy was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Jordan Butler had one hit but scored a run and drove in four. Cooper Pavlovich supplied a hit and a run, and Gabe Kaar added a hit and an RBI. Dan Cote drove in a run.

Up next for the Rams is the Class S State Tournament, which begins on Saturday, May 25 and ends with the finals on Friday, June 7 or Saturday, June 8 at Palmer Field in Middletown.

Softball

The Rams played the biggest game of the regular season last week that had Shoreline Conference and Class S State Tournament implications.

On May 20, Old Saybrook picked up their eighth win of the season with a 12-0 defeat of Innovation and punched its postseason ticket.

The next day, the No. 8 seed Rams went up against No. 1 seed Valley Regional in the Shoreline tourney quarterfinal and took a 12-0 loss at the hands of the Warriors.

With these results, the Old Saybrook’s overall record on the year moved to 8-13.

Up next for Old Saybrook is the Class S State Tournament set to commence on Saturday, May 25. The tournament will conclude with the final on Friday, June 7 or Saturday, June 8.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook saw one of its doubles pairings battle at the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week and come away with All-Conference honors as a result.

On May 22, junior Audra Guigno and senior Amy Young took home All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors after reaching the title match against Allie Champion and Ada Ramos of Valley Regional. Guigno and Young took second place in the tournament after losing by a score of 7-5, 6-3 to the Warriors’ duo.

Golf

The Rams played a pair of matches last week and came away with a split to move to a 9-5 record on the season.

On May 20, Old Saybrook hosted Coginchaug at Fenwick Golf Course’s par-35 course from the blue tees. The Rams lost a narrow 168-170 decision against the Blue Devils. Low man on the day was Rams’ medalist Jack Walsh, who shot a 36. Ben O’Dell came second lowest with a total of 39 strokes. Garrett Brady had a score of 44, while Matt Rothman notched a 51. Garrett Hilger scored a 54 in the loss.

The next day, Old Saybrook headed to the Clinton Country Club and earned a 193-209 road win over the Morgan.
