The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team opened its postseason by posting a 10-9 victory over Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. With the win, the Huskies improved to 11-6 and advanced to play North Branford in the championship game at the Indian River Complex on May 23 (after press time).
On May 21, the Huskies hosted H-K at the Indian River Complex and scored a close 10-9 win against the Cougars. The teams were evenly matched with both scoring three goals in the first quarter, and the score would be knotted once more at 6-6 by the end of the half. Each team added two goals in the third quarter, then the Huskies were just able to outdo H-K with a 2-1 final frame for the 10-9 victory.
Tim Lichack put the ball in the back of the net the most with five goals, while Zak Johnson scored a pair of goals in the win. Ford Pender added a goal and an assist, while Ryan Caldwell and Matt Lee notched a single goal apiece. John Leviness supplied an assist. Matt Luchuk made nine save for the Huskies.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Huskies opened play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week and took a loss in the first round against the defending champions, North Branford. The defeat drops Morgan’s overall record to 7-10 on the year.
On May 21, the No. 4 seed Morgan went up against top-seeded North Branford and lost a lop-sided 18-6 road decision against the Thunderbirds.
The Huskies open play in the Class S State Tournament this week.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Morgan saw some success from several athletes at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet at Coginchaug last week. The Huskies took fifth place as a team with an overall score of 47 points.
Alyssa LeMay snagged a silver medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.14 seconds. LeMay also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 with a time of 27.08. In the long jump, LeMay turned in a leap of 16 feet-11 inches for third place.
Ashley Annicelli brought home a bronze for her throw of 77 feet-2 inches in the discus.
Kayla Pollard recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 with her time of 27.76, and her mark of 1:03.30 earned her fifth place in the 400.
The 4x800 relay of Ella Franzoni, Maura Kelly, Annalyse Olcott, and Isabella Ranaudo earned fifth place with a time of 10:52.61.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Huskies notched some nice finishes at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet on May 22. The team turned in an overall score of 18 points finish in ninth place as a team. Notable finishes at the meet included Paul Rodrigues, who took fourth place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.58. Rodrigues also leaped to fifth place in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet-4 inches. Mike Monty earned a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.73 seconds.
Golf
The Huskies played a single match last week and took a defeat in the decision. The Huskies record fell to 2-14 on the season with the defeat.
On May 21, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook at the Clinton Country Club and took a 193-209 loss against the Rams.
Softball
Morgan played its final game of the 2019 season last week. The Huskies took a loss and their record fell to 4-16 to close out the year.
On May 20, Morgan headed to St. Bernard and lost a close 12-11 road contest. St. Bernard took an early 5-0 lead against Morgan in the first inning, but the Huskies got a couple of runs back in the second to make it 5-2. St. Bernard blew the game back open with six more runs in the third to appear to put the game out of reach. Morgan wouldn’t quit and scored four runs in the fifth to close the gap to 11-6. The Huskies added two more runs in the sixth and the seventh, but couldn’t muster the game-tying run.
Bianca Arias went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Isabella Mongillohad two hits, two runs and an RBI. Sage Follo had a hit and two RBI, and Maggie Mahoney supplied a hit, a run, and an RBI. Becca Shamp added a hit and two runs scored, while Alex Duval had two base hits and a run.
