East Haven Track Posts Points at SCC Championship

The East Haven outdoor track program received plenty of great performances from its girls’ and boys’ teams when the SCC Championships were contested last week. The girls’ team took 10th place by scoring 27 points and saw four athletes finish in the top five of their respective events. The Yellowjackets’ boys’ squad was bolstered by a pair of third-place finishes came in 15th place with 12 points scored at Lyman Hall High School on May 20.

Sophomore Kisha Francois scored 22 of the 27 points for the East Haven girls’ team by claiming second-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the long jump, in addition to finishing third in the 200-meter dash. In the 100, Francois ran the fastest time of 12.72 seconds in the preliminary heat and then timed in at 13.07 in the final to place second.

For the long jump, Francois recorded a leap 16 feet-10 inches to take second place. During the previous week, Francois had won the event for the second-straight year at the SCC West Sectional Championship with a distance of 17-1.5. Francois was also in the thick of things in the 200 at the SCC Championship, ultimately finishing in third place with a time of 26.55 seconds.

Fresh off her victory in the javelin at sectionals, junior Bella Ragaini placed fifth in the event at SCCs with a throw of 97-10, scoring four points for East Haven. Ragaini had won the javelin with a toss of 102-8 at sectionals. Freshman Morgan D’Auria scored a point at the SCC meet by finishing eighth in the triple jump at 33 feet.

Also for East Haven, freshman Juliana Espinoza finished 14th in the 1,600-meter (6:05.68), junior Samantha Schlottman placed 18th for the javelin (65-10), D’Auria came in 20th place in the pole vault (6-6), senior Paige Maffeo finished 21st in the 200 (28.42), and Ragaini placed 22nd in the shot put with a toss of 25 feet-8.5 inches.

On the boys’ side, senior Evan Damian took third place in 110-meter high hurdles, while fellow senior Steve Johnson finished third the long jump to score 12 points for the Yellowjackets. Damian recorded a mark of 15.62 seconds in the final of the 110 hurdles to claim third place. Damian bettered his time from the preliminary heat, where he also finished third at 16.42. Damian had posted a time of 15.50 to win the event in the West Sectional meet. Johnson reached a distance of 20 feet-4.75 inches in the long jump to come in third place at the SCC Championship.

Sophomore Radames Figueroa finished 10th in the 110 hurdles (17.23) and the long jump (19-0.75) and also placed 11th in the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.85) at SCCs. Junior Ian Loehmann finished 11th in the 110 hurdles (17.41) and took 17th in the 300 hurdles (45.99). Junior Kaio Zanette finished in 16th place in the 400 with a time of 53.63 seconds for East Haven.
