Three Hornets’ Teams Finish Regular Season with Wins

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford boys’ lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season by posting a 22-2 victory at Montville on May 20. Next up for Branford is the Class M State Tournament that gets underway this week. Branford went 11-5 during the regular season has and overall mark of 11-6 including its 14-8 loss to Xavier in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament.

Senior Robbie Lionetti scored nine goals to go with three assists in Branford’s win versus Montville. Junior Jack Manware also had a big game by netting five goals and dishing out six assists. Senior Will Riggs had a goal with two assists, while sophomore Luke Volpe posted a pair of goals.

Senior Mike Parker, junior Max Manware, and sophomore Markus Indeck each had a goal with an assist for the Hornets. Sophomore Nick Chieffo contributed two assists, junior Cody McHenry and sophomore Jared Yakimoff scored one goal apiece, and junior Max Bunton had an assist. Sophomore Josh Gottschalk played the first half in net and made two saves. Fellow sophomore Connor Erickson had three saves during the second half.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Hornets will open play in the Class M State Tournament as the two-time defending champion this week. Branford finished with a record of 8-8 during the recent regular season and is 8-9 overall after losing to Sheehan in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals.

Golf

Branford finished up the 2019 regular season by earning a victory versus Foran last week. The Hornets posted a record of 5-12 for regular-season play this year.

Branford hosted Foran on May 20 and defeated the Lions by the score of 189-212 at Pine Orchard Country Club. Junior Minsok Lee collected medalist honors as the low scorer of the meet by turning in a 41 for the Hornets. Freshman Justin Acquarulo shot a 47, sophomore Billy Linder scored a 55, and Luke Albinger finished with a 56 to round out the scoring column for Branford.

Girls’ Tennis

Branford finished the regular season with a record of 12-8 after earning a victory over West Haven last week. The Hornets are playing in the Class M State Tournament this week.

Branford hosted West Haven in its regular-season finale and defeated the Blue Devils by a 4-3 score on May 20. Junior Samantha Velardi posted an 8-2 victory for the Hornets in the No. 3 singles match. The Hornets swept play on the doubles court as their No. 1 team of sophomores Alayna Boileau and Shae Lepre earned a 6-1, 6-0 win, the No. 2 duo of juniors Ellie Bartlett and Sarah Berdon prevailed 6-2, 6-3, and the No. 3 tandem of junior Ka Yee Lam and sophomore Hanna Bloomquist won a 6-1, 6-4 decision.

Boys’ Tennis

The Hornets lost to Amity in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals last week and will be competing at the Class M State Championship this week.

No. 6 seed Branford took a 5-0 defeat against No. 3 Amity in an SCC quarterfinal contest on May 20. The Hornets moved to 12-7 overall on the year with the loss.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Branford sent four athletes to compete at the SCC Championship that was held at Lyman Hall High School on May 20.

Senior Liante Claude put together the best showing for the Hornets by taking 12th place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.25. Senior Carolina Jara finished 15th in the javelin with a throw of 71 feet-7 inches, while sophomore Jennifer Hincapie placed 19th by throwing a 65-9. Junior Rose Lockery placed 22nd in the 200 by timing in at 28.55.
