Marriott Wins the 100 and 200 at SCCs

Senior Erica Marriott claimed first place in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash for the Indians at the Southern Connecticut Championship last week. Marriott’s victories helped the North Haven girls’ outdoor track team finish in sixth place with 49 points scored at Lyman Hall High School on May 20.

Marriott came into the SCC Championship after having edged out East Haven sophomore Kisha Francois for first place in 100 and the 200 at the previous week’s SCC West Sectional Championship. At the conference meet, Marriott placed second in the preliminaries of the 100 with a time of 13.03 seconds, while Francois ran the fastest time of 12.72. However, in the final heat, Marriott sprinted across the finish line with a time of 12.82 to place ahead of Francois (13.07) for the top spot overall. A similar scenario had played out at West Sectionals, where Marriott finished behind Francois in the prelims, but then took first in the final by just one one-hundredth of a second by with a time of 12.53.

In the 200, Marriott clocked in with a time of 25.00 seconds to finish first ahead of Nyimah Ambrose of Hillhouse (25.95) and Francois (26.55) at the SCC Championship. Marriott had previously posted a time of 25.38 to place ahead of Francois (26.29) and win the 200 for the second year in a row at the sectional meet.

Senior Giselle Zumerchik turned in a pair of quality performances in the hurdling events at SCCs. Zumerchik took second place in the 300 hurdles by recording a time of 47.16 seconds. In the 100 hurdles, Zumerchik placed fourth in the preliminaries at 16.83 and then timed in with a 17.28 to finish sixth in the finals. Zumerchik previously had won the 300 hurdles for the second-straight year at West Sectionals with a time of 47.03.

Senior Sarina Sandwell followed up her second-place performance in the triple jump at sectionals by earning runner-up honors at the SCC Championship with a leap of 34 feet-6 inches. Senior Camille Sahirul took fourth place in the long jump at 16-1.25 after having placed second at sectionals. Sahirul also finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 33-7 at the SCC meet.

Junior Giuliana Ciarleglio took eighth place in the javelin with a toss of 92 feet for the Indians. North Haven’s 4x800 relay of freshman Ada Forbes, senior Jackie Howlett, junior Reagan Forbes, and senior Shannon Reilly placed eighth by recording a mark of 10:59.70.

Freshman Brooke Waldron came in 11th place for the 300 hurdles (52.57) and finished 20th in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles (19.73). Junior Elizabeth DeVaux placed 12th in the prelims of the 100 hurdles at 18.93. Senior Katie Rogers finished 12th in the high jump (4-6) and was 17th for the javelin (66-0).

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of junior Sammy Curcio, Sandwell, senior Camille Sahirul, and sophomore Paula Fappiano finished in 12th place (53.11). The 4x400 relay featuring Zumerchik, Sandwell, Fappiano, and Ada Forbes came in 13th place (4:35.70).

Ada Forbes also finished 14th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.20 for North Haven. Junior Samantha Helwig placed 19th in the discus (64-9), and freshman Evani Okwuosa finished 22nd in the preliminaries of the 100 (14.50).
